Agreed M5board is a bit dead for the F Platform M5/M6

I own an M6 Gran Coupe by the way and also a supercharged E39 M5, E34 M5 and E30 M3

Gotta love M Power Cars, new and old alike smile
Thankyou looks good, really like the look of the one in the first ad in northern ireland but it's a bit old

SMG refers to the gearbox, all the V10 M5 M6 have the sequential manual gearbox. Takes a bit of getting used to and it's not as smooth or as fast as the newer DCT model F10 M5/6.

The SMG is a sequential manual gearbox and is essentially a roboticised manual gearbox. You drive it like a manual car and is a lot smoother if you have a little lift off the throttle while changing gears. It has a auto mode but it is dumber that a box of hammers (to quote JC). Some people hate SMG but I really like it and feel it adds to the driving experience. I have a DCT car also and I prefer the SMG. Just a note of caution thought, it will roll away if you don't park it gear or with the handbrake.

SMG stands for Sequential M Gearbox!! M as in ///M.
Says so in the manual nerd (no pun intended)

Just because it has 2 pedals and paddles on the steering wheel doesn't mean the gearbox is the same...
It's going to be different to the DSG you have in your Audis. There's plenty of advice on here on how to use it properly, but essentially you're going to have to use the paddles and be in manual mode all the time.

Thanks for that, I like the Audi dual clutch system and when I had a 3.2 TT I used to go through the gears with my foot down but in the A6 I tend to back off to half throttle and use the torque.
I think I would enjoy the SMG (a Merc 450 is a 44 ton truck with a sequential manual 12 speed box with auto mode, sounds pretty similar to SMG)

Thanks for that, I only use the paddles in the Audi to embarrass people that think a 3 litre diesel estate is a slow truck (300hp), but i used them in the 3.2 TT every day and with driving for a living in different vehicles every day I seem to be able to pick up different types of gearbox quickly. I like the sound of this SMG looking like my next car will be my first BMWbiggrin

There is something about an SMG car. Sure it has its flaws but in some respects so does a manual (runs and hides!). It certainly gives the car a little character and doesn't allow you to just put your foot down.

You've summed it up well. While in the poor E46 M3 form I still use mine in auto mode quite alot. On a couple of occasions in town I will revert to manual.

Potentially. I understand the truck systems are meant to be super smooth now, but yes. Automated manuals have made a return for the trucks, although I guess when you think about it this is unsurprising with the tighter and tigher Euro VI (and possibly VII soon!) limits to come out in addition to other trickery in the trucks including adaptive cruise control which also uses GPS to anticipate roads etc.!

The Audi uses a dual clutch system; these are super smooth smile.

It probably took me around a week of using my SMG 'box to get used to it. 4 months on I am getting on better with it again!

I think 2009 was the last year of manufacture for the V10. There are only a handful of 09/59 plate cars and I have seen one 10 plate E60 M5.

Thanks for that, so it's either late 2009 for the V10 then early 2013 for the new shape?

The newest shape ones came out in 2011, and they had a facelift sometime in 2013.
