No.

In a similar way that an Audi S4 is not an RS4.

Got it.... maybe I should rephrase that to is it M powered, as in falling under this section of the forum?

No. Its not an M car and doesn't fall under the M Power section. And I say this as an owner of an M140i (and also a proper M car) . That doesn't mean they're not good. But M cars are:

M1
M2
M3
M4
M5
M6
M635i
Z3M
Z4M
1M (only just, however good it is)

Not included:
M535i
M140i/240i

One more added that I have (having had a proper M previously wink )

Why is the 1M only just?

Doesn't have an M engine - in same way that M140i doesn't.

The M2 isn't an M engine either.

True. But it's properly breathed on with M parts - whereas the 1M wasn't much different from the 335

Lights on the rev counter that go out as the car warms up = M Car wobble

Seriously, who cares? Just enjoy the cars for what they are! This and all the rest of the threads should be stickied the amount of times they come up rotate

I have always viewed the E12 M535i as an M-car, along with the 850CSi. Same with the 530MLE (the first M road-car) & E23 745i for the South African market

I think the Z4 35is had the same/identical turbo donkey as well? ETA: admittedly it did sound rather good in that recent 1MvsM2 comparison CH did, albeit it with a fancy exhaust.

As for the suggestion that the X50M diesel should be considered as a true M car shootshoot

Yes correct - the 1M shared its engine with the Z4 35is. And that certainly isn't an M car. And an M car should have an engine that ideally has an S number (M2 and 1M aside) and isn't shared with another non M (1M aside). Confusing for many people isn't it! Particularly with the M635i being an M car but the M535i not!

The N54 was a a rather good engine and what BMW opted for when the N55 was available.

It was also the choice for Alpina for their B3 GT3.

Except for the massive hike in front and rear track compared to the body width and the fantastic E92 LSD and thicker ARBs to suit. That makes a huge difference.

IMO, without an LSD, a BMW is nothing.

My M5 doesn't have an 'S' engine. Pretty sure it's still an M car though.
