Except for the massive hike in front and rear track compared to the body width and the fantastic E92 LSD and thicker ARBs to suit. .
Sorry - I meant engine. I know all the other stuff that changed - hence it's an M car, despite not having a 'proper' M engine!

No. Its not an M car and doesn't fall under the M Power section. And I say this as an owner of an M140i (and also a proper M car) . That doesn't mean they're not good. But M cars are:

M1
M2
M3
M4
M5
M6
M635i
Z3M
Z4M
1M (only just, however good it is)

Not included:
M535i
M140i/240i
What about the X5M and X6M (the proper petrol versions)? I know these are controversial but they are proper M cars

Yes I guess they are! Better update my list. But as you say, controversial!

My M5 doesn't have an 'S' engine. Pretty sure it's still an M car though.
Which M5? The e28? That has the S38B35 engine doesn't it?

Not in Europe it doesn't - M88/3, same as the M635CSi.

Not forgetting the M88 fitted to the M1.

My X5 4.8is had those too...that means I've had 3 proper M cars then! smokin

The M2 isn't really a proper M car as it's just a M235i with bigger brakes and a LSD for me.

As others have said it just doesn't really matter and just buy a car you like and enjoy it. smile

It's a hard one. I guess other brands have sports marques and out and out marques including:

Ford's XR to the RS, where XR became the ST.
Audi's S to the RS
Peugeot's XSi and SRi monikers next to the GTIs and Mi's/

The BMW nomenclature is a little more confusing I guess the Ms previously were for the pinnacle of what BMW were making. I would say the M*** are M cars since they were just that. The X*Ms are a tricky one but I reckon just make the cut. However, I wouldn't say the M Sports are for that matter, as much as the man in his 318d M Sport wants to think so.

Off the list however was an 850CSi. Not technically an M car but certainly is by the root of its components. S derived engine and quite a few differences over the road going 850i & Ci. I do almost wonder why it wasn't call that and if an M8 was in the pipeline what it would have been.

But as said, you like it that's what matters. I wouldn't be unhappy in an M140i or 240i for that matter.

And I didn't realise the old 4.8iS which has lights in the rev counter should by rights be an M then wink

You can take the 850CSi off that list - the engine may be an 'S', but for it to properly count it's from the era when proper M engines have ITBs, and it doesn't.

That's an interesting line of thought. I read that it has less sound deadening, which has to make it feel a touch more raw, plus different suspension, firmer ARBs again and a wider track. That all helps... however, on the downside it has the same driving mode switch as the M235i, which is bloody annoying to use compared to the preset facility on the M3, but still isn't as good as simply DSC=off on the E46 M3 (and stays off regardless of cruise control use etc) or even better no DSC at all on the E36 M3! smile

M2 supposedly has different engine internals to the M235i as well, borrowed from the S55. The whole car is a lot more raw, exhaust for example sounds great etc, not to mention it's aggressive looks.

Yes we got the sales BS when my wife bought an X5 M50d.. "the reason it has grey mirrors is because it has been built by the M-division and therefore is really the closest you can get to a petrol X5M ".....

Apart form another turbo being bolted on and and £10k (and to be fair, a few more standard fit items) it's no different than my mates 30d...
