In reality on the road they're pretty much as fast as each other, there's still the same power going to the same wheels.

Only time saved is changing gear. You won't ever put your foot down in a manual M4 and think that you wished you got the DCT as it's quicker.. cars feel fast when the engine is working, not the gap between gears.

I'm a big auto fan still, I do find it frustrating that you can't give them full throttle at low revs without them changing down though.
Love this thread. Fancy the manual after a manual e92 and auto 435. Always wondered if the m4 turbo would suit the manual better with that midrange punch in 3rd that the m3 lacked.

The strangest thing about going auto after manual was not being able block shift

Erm, you can?

At least I can in an E46 M3 SMG and also in a Clio 220 EDC. wink.

you can block downshift in the DCT but only to the max. Cruising in 7th, floor it past the kick down point and then flick the left paddle and it will select the lowest posisble gear and launch (from 65/70mph in 7th it will usually select 3rd) . Do this with DTC off in the wet and you will go sideways though - just a word of warning lol.

i know what you mean but thought id point this out if you didnt realise it was possible.

Can't you just hit the paddle twice in quick succession? That works for me in my scenario smile.

Think this car has £36500 written on it.

oh yeah sure but thats technically not block shifting. it just goes down through the gears super fast. i think wat was meant is you cant drop from cruising gear to low high rpm gear in one go like you can in a manual (as in 6th to 3rd for an overtake etc). but you can in the way i described.

sure you can cycle through the gears super fast one by one just by flicking the paddle. it will change gear as fast as you can paddle flick which is pretty fast.

That does look cheap! A friend of mine paid a little more, albeit not much more for a 64 plate on 15k a few months back!

Depends how you look at it. You are still skipping gears to go to your desired gear but I see your point smile.

Tbh it looks like a basic car. However it looks cheap. Love the colour also.

Thats not exactly how it works.
Odd gears are on one gear set and even gears on another.
So a triple downshift paddle click to go from say 6th to 3rd is a single shift, no cycling down through the gears..the DCT selects 3rd on the other set and makes the shift (as long as it wouldn't cause an over rev.)
On the other hand a double click on the downshift paddle to go from 6th to 4th is different as the gears are on the same gear set so the DCT has to through 5th to 4th although the driver should perceive it as a single shift.

I've not had too much exposure to the DCT only the auto which won't block shift but I miss the control and flexibility block shifting gives.

Car above looks ok but heads up and hk are missing

The ZF 8 speed used by BMW has been able to block shift since 2014 I think.
Certainly all 3 of my 2016's can block shift.

I must be missing a trick. How do you block shift? Say In manual 8th gear, how do you drop it to 3rd? Or if you're in 4th how do you skip to 7th in one hit?

Say you're in comfort, in D, at 45mph, and you want to overtake the car in front.
Simply pull the left paddle (and hold it) and floor the loud pedal (far enough to hit the kickdown switch).
It'll change from D (8th) to whatever gear is appropriate (at 45mph probably 3rd?).
Now let go of the left paddle and continue on with your overtake, changing up with the right paddle.

Once you've finished and settled back to a cruising speed it'll revert back to D by itself (after 20 or 30 seconds, i can't remember exactly).

Another vote for the manual M4 here. Following my manual E92 M3, I got a manual M135i which was disappointing. Dealer put me in a DCT F82 for the weekend. Loved the car and the gearbox but after a weekend I was starting to get bored of the DCT. So I ordered a manual, much to the surprise of the dealers - first manual F8x they had sold!

Definitely the right decision for me. Love the car.

Have you seen how rare they are?
