Been the same with every M car released in the last 15 year. I still shake my head in disbelief at people who believe the stealers saying “oh not going to make many of these; only 2-3 cars per dealer, etc, etc” 6-9 months later the markets flooded with new unregistered cars and out roll the deals.
A vast number of these cars were previously bought by company owners, taking a mileage allowance. Problem is, most of these guys/gals (well me anyway) are now running company Ev’s and wondering why we spun*ed so much away on these heavily depreciating beasts (well I am anyway!)
As much as i was enjoying the trolling i'll chip in on my recent experience. Writing this whilst on the train to collect it today...
I really wanted a M3T when they came out, but had convinced myself to wait a few years until they were 50-60k, which they probably will be by end of the year.
The family car lease was up in January though so had been looking around for something with reasonable monthly payments to replace it. Anything half decent and used in the 50-60k bracket was circa £8-900 month which was more than i originally wanted to pay, and 2-3 years old.
I then saw the 4.9APR offer from BMW on M3T and sub 80k discounts. After some further negotiations and playing them off one another, they have knocked even more off (£11k in total) so have pulled the trigger. No options, Brooklyn grey. Not the spec i wanted TBH but as per lease deals, you cant be picky if you want the biggest % discounts.
Yes it will depreciate like a stone but as its PCP (meaning i can get out of it if i really want too) and monthly's of £900ish it's comparable to buying a 2-3 year old £50-60k performance family car anyway. But now we get a brand new car, 3 years warranty etc etc. Logic being if i waited until they were £50-60k i'd still be paying £900 month but the car then wouldn't be brand new with all those benefits, but i suppose could be the spec i wanted...

Without a doubt. There are 23 of them on Autotrader this morning listed between £75k and £79k. I’d imagine that in a year’s time there will be M3Ts available for under £60k. I suspect you’ll be able to pick up a touring for 60-65k in 12 months.

That would be very interesting if the £37k becomes a reality, it's the only car I can imagine replacing my F82 M4 with at at that value it would likely be doable.I've been lurking and going around in circles on this one too - having had 3 RS6s (two C7s and then a disasterously unreliable C8, which they couldn't fix and frankly didn't care about) I left Audi in April last year and went straight into a 340iX touring, which is a great car and loaded with tech/extras, but really leaves me rather cold from a driving and performance perspective, so I went and test drove the one at BMW farnborough (ex demo 73 reg car with most of the spec I wanted) about 10 days ago in the hope that it would either convince me that I should change immediately, or forget the idea altogether - it did neither, so I made them an offer to change out of my 340, but they wouldn't (or perhaps couldn't) budge any further on their car (they were asking just under £80k for a circa £92K spec with nearly 5k miles on it) so I walked away to think about it and they appear to have sold the car.
A couple of things surprised me about the admitedly very short, test drive, firstly how comfortable the car felt relative to the 340, there really wasn't a massive difference in ride quality in comfort mode, though the tyre noise/harshness was unsurprisingly significantly more noticeable, and given there was a salesman in the car I couldn't really give it full acceleration for very long and though undoubtedly quicker than the 340, it didn't feel night and day and not as quick as I remember the RS6 - though I know Carwow and all the other youtubers have proven it to be. This leaves me wondering whether the M3T of an equivalent spec (I want the tech pack plus, comfort pack and vis pack as a minimum) is really worth twice the 340 (with same options) - but I guess it is a law of diminishing returns and can be overcome with some man maths - it also strikes me that when trading the 340, dealers don't want to give much for it and are also unwilling to give any real discount from asking price on the M3 - I guess as has already been stated it may be a case of finding several similar spec'd and aged M3s and playing them off against each other to find out which is most desperate to do a deal? Or even sitting it out for a while.

Intercooler pitching the B3, m340i and the M3 against one another was quite an interesting read.
Unfortunately given the engines are now largely the same it’s harder for M to really make that much of a difference. Yes it’s quicker but in real world how much quicker do you need it to be vs a M340i?
Similar chassis wide I suspect most people won’t be able to push it anywhere close to where the M magic starts to really appear. I am probably exaggerating but you get my drift..
At least AMG used to put bonkers engine in their cars that would make all the difference.. same for Audi etc.. now all that is also going.. the RS6 remaining the last with a decently special engine.. and AMG also keeping the best only for the E63..

What was the conclusion to the intercooler article, I watched the video and of course they stated at the end that you'd have to subscribe to find out which they favoured in the conclusion, but I got the feeling that it wasn't the M3, it sounded as if Andrew Frankel preferred either the B3 or 340?
For me I have a couple of other thoughts in mind too - as you say we're already into the last of these cars and I am wondering if I got an M3T whether it would just be a long term keeper and stick a load of miles on it as the everyday car and effectively keep it forever, or until the wheels fell off and then depreciation would be irrelevant (however I could do that with the 340i and it would cost me half the amount) - the other way of looking at it is that the depreciation on the M3T may be lower as a result of it likley being the last of that kind of vehicle
I do have a weekend toy, so I also question whether the M3T would make that less relevant and take the fun out of it.
Farnborough BMW have rung me again this morning and offered an April delivery of a new car, to my spec, with some sort of discount, though they weren't too specific as to how much, it sounded like around 7-8K, so I'm very much on the fence currently...... should probably forget it for a few months and see what happens out there in the spring - but prices might firm up a bit and discounts disappear?

I bought mine cash, so not bothered about the interest rates but increasingly mindful of the fact that depreciation on the first (and possibly only M3T) will be savage. As much as I would like to think that I would keep it for a long time, I also know my own tendency to change cars way too frequently. The EV revolution, will unfortunately make owning ICE cars increasingly expensive with fuel and punitive taxation, and for most people getting cheaply from A to B, on a fixed lease deal is more important than savouring what is an excellent M3.
so i had a good spin in one this weekend courtesy of bmw in swindon as i seriously weigh up the m3t vs b3 touring
it didnt overwhelm me buts it capable and i actually like how it looks. didnt have the ceramics nor buckets which i would want ideally
ill be in the b3 touring on 10 feb so should have a good sense of the pros / cons of each and happy to share my thoughts here if anyone is interested or is also considering which way to turn
given what has happened to prices since i first posted, i think these are likely to become cheaper much quicker than i thought. not sure the curve is as steep for the b3 but lets see

Not the OP, but I had a back to back test drive of the B3 and the M3 Touring recently and for doing lots of mileage I would definitely look at the Alpina. Loads of torque, flat through the corners and super comfy. Plus you can get a Pan roof - not that I noticed it as the blind was closed the whole time...Joking aside, I’d really like to hear how you think the two cars compare.
I went in pretty much set on the M3 so I had a natural bias, but it felt very different to the Alpina and a lot like my M2 Comp.
Which was interesting as when I drove the new M2 a few months back I felt a bit disappointed with it and was glad to get back in my own car. Whereas after driving the M3 I was ready to place an order.
The Alpina does offer a nice middle ground and is still special without being as raw as the M car.
