Having owned a lovely e92 comp with Eventuri plenum and MPE for 2 years, I miss that sound, oh that sound!!!

But… otherwise, I haven’t really missed the car, it doesn’t feel special enough to me. The seats are like lazy-boy recliners and the position is way to high, and I just thought it lacked occasion.

I’m back in an F82 now, and even as a toy it feels and looks absolutely fantastic. This is my 4th and it’s for keeps.

Agree. Mine got stolen a couple of months ago and even though I got a very good insurance payout, I’m not planning on getting another.

Agree on the noise and, personally, I think they look fantastic - but in 4 years of ownership I can count on one hand the number of times I woke up early to take it out for a drive.

I think I could have another one one day, and just get a leggier example and do a sort of “clubsport” build it may be more appealing for a Sunday morning road blast, or an odd track day. Strip out the rear and put in some pole positions, kw suspension, plenum etc.

Would be a shame to do it to a clean example though.

Had several E46s - coupe & cab. Have been running E92 for over 4 years now. Nothing, but nothing has gone wrong and love the DCT box for a daily. Actually love it full stop! Much more ‘grown up’ than E46. Very civilised in its more relaxed settings. Programme the M button more aggressively and it’s great fun. Tax & fuel ££££ daft by hey ho. Paid £18k for it 4 years ago now prob worth £25k (low miles & FBMWSH) so owes me nothing. Would I have another E46? Of course! And, if you’ve got a good one, I’d hang on to it!

Took my Comp Pack car out for a little drive on Friday night, after the traffic had died down.

What a delight - such a broad capability, from relaxed and refined cruiser, to high rev screamer.

Wonderfully benign and throttle adjustable handling, even without exploiting MDM, when it becomes even more agile.

I love it - even after 12 years of ownership, it always feels special to me.

Thanks in part, to the front and rear suspension total refresh and underside restoration (at Redish) it feels absolutely solid and tight as a new car.

Going to have to keep it, I think.....;-)

I have one of the last E92 M3s off the production line. It’s a rare (for that time in production) 2013 manual car - LE500 non comp in carbon black.

I picked it up a year ago with 18k miles on the clock. As you can expect it was like new everywhere - inside, out, mechanicals, etc.
It’s tastefully upgraded by me and previous owner: eventuri intake, akrapovic exhaust, evolve map, Recaro sportster CS buckets (to lower the driving position), Comp wheels, and MSS lowering springs.

I love the drive and do not get any of the downsides mentioned ie there are no flat spots in delivery, the manual gear change is great (especially with the lowered seats as you push from hips and not stab pedals from on top), the exhaust and plenum mean that the noise comes from front or back depending on Rev band position smile The gear change is slick. Maybe the later cars had ironed out earlier issues?

I love it and don’t subscribe to the ‘it only works with DCT’ club.

I also have a heavily (but tastefully) upgraded manual E46 M3 in imola red. The E46 is more raw (lighter, angrier, etc) and if driving briskly at <60mph then perhaps better suited to Sunday blasts as you get to exploit its limits more. The E92’s limits are just way higher. Plus the E46 is a very pretty car.

They both have their place. I think it depends on how you want to use them, what else you may have, and just where you are in your journey.

I want to reduce the garage a bit as space is limiting as is desire to run around all the MOTs etc.
Having had the E46 for over 7 years I just feel like I want to spent more time with the E92. The E92 is more grown up whilst I do have other hooligan cars so can forgo the E46. The Mrs will sit in the E92 with std suspension but not the E46 on KW Competitions! So…the E46 will be going.

However, I do see how the case for either car might work for others.

I had a similar niggle with my E92 M3 interior wise too, and for me it was exactly the same inside as the E90 330d that I had before it. Only the 330d had a better driving position because you sat lower in that in comparison. Plus using the M3 everyday just wiped away any specialness that it had for me as well.

Weirdly I still find the F82 M4 special after nearly 3 years though, however I've got other performance cars too though, so that probably helps because my expectations of it aren't as high as they were with the M3 in comparison. Plus the M3 was my only car at the time, and I think I just missed having another car to fall back on/compare it to.

What a great pair of cars! thumbup

I still miss my Imola Red E46 325ti Compact so would have loved your E46 if I didn't already have a Z4M Coupe for my M fix!

Thanks.

That’s the thing, they all are individually great but you have to draw a line somewhere in terms of what you can/will keep. Else I should have kept my E39 M5 too which I sold last year after 17 years of ownership! frown
