No they're not. Admittedly, there's a big fall the day you drive a brand new one out of a show room, which perhaps goes to show they were over-priced new, but from then onwards its fairly acceptable depreciation by any sensible measure. If you look through the classifieds, prices have firmed up and there's only about 15% difference in price between a summer 06 car with highish miles and a low mileage summer 08 car - hardly plummeting values. Neil I dont know what your on, if anything the values are increasing!! This was proven by a few on here who were offered higher trade in values compared with what they paid late last year.
I also wouldn't consider the 350z to be a credible rival. Cayman is a good alternative if you want something that is arguably more involving but with less power.

Having owned a 350z GT a Boxster (ok not a cayman) and now a Z4M Coupe - I can definitely confirm that the Z4M compared with the 350z certainly is the better car.
Heres my view:
1. The Z4M (and standard Z4 Coupe) has a MUCH MUCH better engine - in my view, this was the let down on the 350z and it never felt eager enough...even the newer 300bhp units are not great. Obviously the Z4M has a few more BHP too which helps but having had various bmws - before this, an ALPINA B3 3.3 which produced 280bhp - there was no comparison...the bmw units are far superior
2. With the BMW the interior is a much nicer place to be - obviously japanese cars generally tend to be a bit plasticy and the 350z was no exception....however it has to be acknowledged that the Z4M is significantly more money
3. Both cars inspired confidence through the corners and to be honest I think the 350z was very well balanced and an easier car to drive. It depends on the feel you like from a car and I quite like the fact that the Z4M's rear dances about a bit in comparison!
4. The gearbox on the 350Z was quite notchy, though an easier shift than the Z4M. That said, I think the ratios are better in the BMW.
5. Servicing/Running costs - I found the 350z to be extremely expensive when going through the main dealer and a lot more cash than BMW's ive owned. I got quoted something radiculous like £1200 for new rear disks and pads! therefore I dont think there are any benefits with the Nissan in this department
6. For around £9-10k you can now pick up a 2003/2004 350Z GT - It has to be said, for this money its a brilliant car! but saying that shelling out the extra £10-15k for a newer Z4m my view is well worth it and im confident anyone with any doubts wont regret this decision!

I have a M3 CS Coupe with a BMW Manual Gearbox. Maybe one day I will get a Z4 M Coupe or Z3 M Coupe (S54) or M3 CSL .... Hopefully .... :-)
I like this car because great engine and seems like a real driver's car and a real event to drive. These are also rare but so is the M3 CS Coupe (which unless Interlagos Blue Metallic Paint) looks like a regular M3. Never driven the Z4 M or Z3 M but they do appeal .... :-)

I think it will be the last prestige car I will buy for a good while.. Nothing else really out there that appeals and I've just bought a house.. Next big purchase after carpets & flooring is to replace ma clio with another but this time a five door diesel.
