how is the boot spoiler attached?

thinking about buying an e36 m3, much prefer the look of the car without the spoiler.

is it possible to remove it without too much trouble?

thanks,

rick.

it just a matter of undoing the bolts holding the spoiler on. you can get this through the hole on the underside of the boot. there are a coupe of black plugs which need to be pulled out to gain access. be warned though, its rather tricky as there isnt much room.

Good luck

It is screwed to the bootlid, so removing it will leave some holes which you'll need to fill, and then respray.

I'm doing exactly this at the moment, but have decided it's easier to get a new (2nd hand) bootlid and get that sprayed to match.

Hmm, on my coupe the spoiler is mounted with screws that are located along the edge of the bootlid. These sit exposed to the boot's rain gutter when the boot is closed. I have taken these screws out, bit one of them was already rounded off. After I drill this out I need to soften the sticky stuff a bit, and then get to work on cleaning the paint up. I aim to blank off the holes with push fit gromits. Not sure where the elctrics run for the spoiler brakelight though!

If it looks awful, I'll look at a replacement bootlid, or different spoiler. I think it spoils the lines of the car.

The spoiler is fixed on with weapons grade adhesive. The screws are effectively superflous. Unless you have a heavy duty heat gun you will not remove it. If you get it off the liklihood that the paint will come with it is high. Then you will have five holes to fill. One for each screw and the final for the brake light wire which feeds in from the offside of the bootlid.

I had mine removed and replaced with a GT2 spoiler (which looks much, much better and I'm not a fan of spoilers). 'Despoilering' the bootlid is effectively a bit of an oxymoron as you will be left with a mess of holes, stuborn adhesive and lifted/damaged laquer. Best plan is to source a plain one and have it painted.
