After waiting 18 months for my E46, i thought 'never again' and put my name straight down for the next one.

Three years late, at the top of the waiting list for the E92, I pulled out after reading luke warm reviews and getting worried about the residuals.

Nine months later, looking at the £45k cars on the BMW AUC site, I'm glad I've avoided a £10k hit.

That's why people order the car when it's on the market for one year, late adopters hehe, and get it 7k off list. smile

Great car though, despite the initial reviews. 20% hit in the first year, that's about right for any car. So, now you can go buy a second hand model and enjoy - what are you waiting for?

On the other hand! smile I ordered my car early, had the excitement of taking delivery of one of the first customer cars, enjoyed every minute of nearly six months ownership and sold for a very reasonable (IMO) £5k 'hit'. Never regretted a minute of it. Roll on the CSL.

Meanwhile some a still just 'talking' about owning one.wink

i think if you can't bear £10-15K depreciation in the first year, you have no business buying a £50,000+ car. They all do it. And remember that if BMW are selling them for £47,000, you can bet they'll only have given £40-42,000 for it.

Well, excuse me!

The E46 lost almost nothing in its first year after launch.

I got mine after that first year, but even when mine was two years old I was offered only £8k less than I paid it! (Kept it though.)

So I presume if you can afford to buy a £50,000 you also have the means to throw money away as though it is nothing? Great logic(!)

Oops - upset loads of you there!! smile

To take Deutcher's point, I think you're talking about the days where a special new car in short supply would retain it's value because the waiting lists for a new one was years long. Nowadays that doesn't seem to happen. BMW can deliver you a new M3 in a few months (or so I've been told) so why buy a second hand one unless it's alot cheaper? Look at the AMV8...loads of people jumped on the band wagon and got on the list early...some were probably wanting to make a quick buck by passing it on to people who would pay more rather than wait. I think alot of those early adopters got burned.

Why is this different now? Well I guess because the car manufacturers aren't in the business of restricting supply anymore. They'll build as many as they can sell. Ergo no waiting lists. So special (with some exceptions obviously) cars depreciate like every other car. 25-30% lost in the first year? Yep, easy.

To answer Pugsey; is it unusual to find the trade in price of a car that was £50K when new is suddenly only worth £35-37K as a trade in a year later? Porsche Cayman S anyone? They do that. So to RangeRover Sports. Especially if a large part of the new price was optional extras. I know the dealer then still sells it on for a bit less than list, but that doesn't make any difference to us because only main dealers can get away with it.

Huli - well, I don't like the logic...but I think it's something you have to bear in mind when you make a purchase like that. You never really know what the market for cars is going to be like a few years hence...and if you want to get out of it a year in (for example) you could find yourself being fleeced. The dealers always want a £5000 margin so they can pay for all the warranty stuff etc. So if the car has depreciated by £8-10,000 in the first year, you'll still effectively losing £12-15K.

And hey fellas...no offence intended or taken...it's just my thoughts from bitter experience!! smile

When I got mine some 2/3 weeks ago the finance manager had just stolen someone's quote....... if it appreciates use your own money, if it depreciates use someone else's.

With that in mind and the current market, I opted for the PCP route. I original went in there with my part ex and some cash.

however since dwelling over the figures i can see this love affair turning out to be rather a costly one.

i see a well specced m3 with 20k on the clock this time next year worth approx 35/37k on the private market.

i've realized that the main topic surrounding the e92 M3 seems to involve resale values. Not just on pistonheads!!!

think were forgetting that we've bought one hell of a car. she may not have the looks justified by her price tag but in every other sense she scores higher than any other equivalent out there.

do i regret not buying a 997 C2s....not one bit!!

All this depreciation is good news for me, where the E92 M3 manual retails for around £107,000.

Wait a few years then hopefully I can get an import for around £80-90k

The E92 just doesn't have the 'I want one' factor unlike the E46. Plus the market is also affected by the economy which is in a bit of a $hit state with escalating fuel prices to add to the problem so people are not so willing to borrow or pay for £50k+ cars.

Sorry but I still think that the E46 looks soooo much better than the E92 and that new front intake looks like the mouth of a confused looking rock fish which make it look as ugly as sin. The exposed exhaust box doesn't do it any favours at all. The interior looks cheap for a £50k car.

Couldn't agree more!!!! What IS it with people that 90% of posts re this car are about depreciation - interestingly nearly all by people who haven't got one but MAY buy one. As I said earlier I 'lost' £5k over six months on mine and it was worth every £. Now if someone wants talk about the actual car I'd love to but depreciation? Boring. If people want to keep on (and on!) waiting until the 'right' time to buy that's fine. Me - I've already enjoyed a fantastic car, for a reasonable cost.smile

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz

Quelle Surprise. News just in....

A new car depreciates. Snore. Snore. Snore.

What annoys me about all this froth is it is the only thing spoken about in relation to an E92 as if it is peculiar to that model. My CSL lost a heap, too, but it was utterly fabulous. I am a car enthusiast first and Ebenezer Scrooge second. If you can't afford the depreciation, don't buy one. Leaves the allocation to real enthusiasts, not nasal bores whose limited imagination is stilted by feeling foolish they made a bad buy based on depreciation. They can drive the diesel Lexus's of the world.

Where does the concept of value fit in here?

The E92 is a brilliant car. £5k more than a matching RS4. Sure. My car made 403.5 bhp on Saturday at Thorneys and an RS4 made 366... The RS4 has dropped £10k from new and mine has matched it. Which one serves up value? For some reason the Audi seams to avoid all this price drop hysteria. Odd.

I think the days of depreciation free driving from the likes of Porsche, Mercedes and BMW are now firmly in past. Get used to it, or drive a 7 year old Mondeo ST24..
