255/40/17 on the rear E36 M3?
Discussion
I don't really understand this.
Having loads of rubber on the rear is only going to make the car less enjoyable, and as for looks - well, it's still only a 3er, how "good" do you expect an extra cm of rubber to look???
Stick with the 245s, or drop to 235, take the car out and enjoy it! Otherwise you may as well just get a 318is with M-tech kit and 265 rear tyres.

Personally I don;t think it will harm - not quite sure what all this talk of ruining the handling is about - although I admit I have tried wide and less wide in recent succession so have no yardstick to compare against. I have 265 width rears, Hartge's and it all feels fine. So there. Not sure if the arches have been rolled.
Some of you are taking this far too seriously!!!!
I know the handling might be affected ever so slightly on the road.
I am not bothered with this small difference. I was only wondering if the tyres rub or not!!!!
As for looks. I like the look of the wider rubber at the rear view, when following the car (or after being overtaken!) It's only a minor detail, but I like that fat tyred look, gives more presence. I would only change them when the old ones are shot, so I'm not even shelling out unnecessarily!
I'm not expecting the damn car to look like an Aston just by changing the tyres!!!!
So some think they will fit and some won't?!?!?!

Have we quantified what wheels you've got - or more to the point, what offset you're running? This is the most important factor. Genuine OE wheels may not cause a problem, but if you've got aftermarket wheels with a smaller offset, then a 255 tyre may cause problems.I know the handling might be affected ever so slightly on the road.

The height of your suspension will also be influential
