Had mine for nearly 10k now. Get one! Can't recommend it enough. Much better than a similar priced product from AMG (in my experience).
24 mpg on the motorway. <10 if you try hard.
Don't take it to the track unless you have to - far too heavy & big.
Can't compare a family saloon with a TVR either, although it is just as quick!
running costs, well I've replaced an alternator (rare to go wrong), used 1 litre of oil (£15!), replaced a PDC sensor, a 'hedgehog" and thats about it. Oh, and an upto date satnav cd.
Next service is an oil service (18k ish between services) and that will be about £150 from a main dealer.
So, apart from fuel it isn't too bad to run.

hello everyone,
i didnt think there was such thing as a quiet vanos on a pre 2001 car?
and does anybody know of a vanos that has actually failed?
in response to fuel,i run mine on super unleaded and achieve between 18-20mpg and up to 26mpg on a run, these cars are a piece of superb engineering. dont listen to any horror stories.
my car has done 160,000 miles.and runs and feels as good as new.

Part of me says its irresponsible owning such a car when I don't even need the back seats, never mind a loan of around £12k plus the usual running costs on a £50k car. Part of me says "look, you work hard, do ok and have no mortgage or kids - do it!"). I've not sorted out which part of me is in control of the finances yet though wink

At least I'm not alone in my quandary!
In 5 or 10 years time this decision will be that much harder and you'll ask yourself why the hell you didn't go for it when you had the chance. I've got wife and kid now, but still ended up buying another M5.

I'm on my second E34, and they are expensive to run, partly cos you have to play catch up with other people's neglect, but it has left me wondering if an E39 wouldn't have cost anymore.... However, and without wishing to trigger an avalanche of posts, I like the E34 for its more mechanical feel. My E39 experience of a 530i Sport left me cold - electronic throttle mad!

If you are undecided and want to know more about the older car please let me know. There is also a very nice looking example (unrelated to me) for sale by an M5 board member thats had lots of the most expensive stuff done.
