But if you are cruising and doing 200 miles a day then why not buy a 535d Touring? DMS the baby and then you have the best of both worlds in terms of performance and fuel economy. Thats what I did...would never buy an M5 or RS6 for that job.
Exactly.

To re-iterate, I love the idea of the M5 but it's so insanely far away from being usable in the UK, and at such a ridiculous premium, that it just doesn't make any sense at all.

I still appreciate that, senseless or not, there are people who might one, but please don't try to convince us that it's worth its price.

just becaus it isn't to you doesn't mean that is the case for everyone. I would be bored by a 535d.

a small price to pay, I assure you. I have managed to get my French Autoroute and German Autobahn pitstops down to a couple of minutes (send the wife in to pay the instant the filling stops) - not quite F1 standard, but then I don't have a full pit crew. biggrin

Odd then that I use mine every day. Odder still that I am tempted to buy something a little more extreme to use day-to-day to reserve the M5 for family outings.

I just like cars and driving them.

To be honest I'd love an M5 and would love to try and get the pit stops down to under 8 seconds smile

I've been through a few cars over the last few years and prior to the 535d had a 4.8iS X5. I drove 35000 miles in the year I had it and enjoyed every one but to be honest got fed up boosting Shell's profits every other day.

I simply drive too many miles at the moment (and obviously far too tight wink )

I agree that it is pretty nonsensical to buy a performance car to do 1000 miles a week without recognising that it is going to consume a lot more fuel than an ordinary cruiser. But these comments about the 'insanity' or 'senselessness' of the M5 are way off the mark - the M5 offers incredible performance for a family saloon, whether it's 0-60 or above, with a glorious V10 soundtrack; it also offers the usual M-power package of build quality and handling. If you want an all-round performance saloon it is difficult to find better value whether new or secondhand. I wanted a car which would comfortably accommodate me, the wife and our 3 young kids [in car seats] and their paraphenalia, without compromising on performance and exhilaration. So I was looking at cars like the 911, Maserati, Aston, Merc AMGs and Audi RS4/6 before deciding on the M5 saloon. It is with these cars that you have to compare the M5 (not the 535d which is a great car but not at all comparable to a V-10 wielding M product).

i also run an e60 m5 as a daily driver and think that comments like insane etc are the reserve of people who have never actually owned or run a car like this

of course the mpg could be better, but this is a small price to pay for the machine but to seriously compare a 535d with an m5 is "insanity"

Each to their own. My colleague has owned lots of exotica but finds the M5 hardwork for his long commutes. It isnt wrong or right, it is just the way he feels. I used to find my Cerberas too hard work for every day use. Others dont. Good luck to them.

Sorry Skeeterm5 I disagree.

I have run cars on a par the M5 and if you are driving the mileage I am comparing it against the 535d as an everyday drive is right on. No one is suggesting that the 535d is up with the M5, just a very good alternative. Get one DMS'd as an everyday car it will give sufficient bang for your buck to keep you happy without the huge running costs of an M5 doing 30k miles per year wink

However drive a sensible mileage, don't muck about and get an M5!

I am not sure your maths holds up....

30,000 miles per year - 535d gets 40mpg (say) thats 750 gallons of fuel which is 3410 litres at 1.30 per litre = 4.5k diesal fuel cost per year. An m5 does 20mpg but petrol is now around 1.17 per litre so the cost isnt even doubled........

Now, if you can afford to spend north of 35k on car an increase running cost of 3.5k (or about 300 per month) is simply not a material cost (imho) and when you add the grin factor i cant buy your arguement......

but then, horses for courses i suppose....

Apologies for the slight threadjack, but I'm looking at upgrading from my 330d after 6 years to an E60 M5 and am wondering if any M5 owners would be kind enough to float a few figures my way re mpg and running/servicing costs? PM if you prefer. It would be a daily driver c.100 miles per day on fast A roads and into the centre of London (I'd say 50/50 split of the two). From initial research I know that I'm looking at around half the mpg of the 330d (currently around 30-35mpg depending on my foot) and a lot more in servicing than at current (but I don't know how much more - the current car is pretty good in that respect, no more than £2K a year I'd say).

Any help or advice will be more than gratefully recieved! bow

Back on track, I've yet to see many M5 tourers in anything other than Silverstone which is not a colour I'm particularly keen on. I'm still a bit torn on saloon v tourer as well tbh. I should get a tourer (as it'd be properly handy for work and play) but I just love the shape of the saloon. I thought spending money was supposed to be fun, not hard! banghead

The way I drive when I can and bear in mind I do most of my driving in London I'd be very lucky to see 20mpg. I think from memory and an earlier thread Zod gets 9 or so on his way to work and I would expect an average somewhere around 15 at best which makes the cost difference too much to justify that car in my own mind.
