which M engine is the ONE??!!??
Discussion
most of us in here a M owners and ALL M engines really are truely awesome, they sound awesome, they produce fantastic power outputs but..... which M engine sticks out for you as the best engine the m department have made and why? im going to be slightly biased here and im going to choose the s54 as one of my faves, the noise, the power delivery, the torque, pretty much everythink makes this a world class engine. so whats yours and why?
and of course the greatest engine ever???

S38 for me.
The S50 was the 1st production engine to broach 100bhp per litre, the S54 moved the game on with greater power and better emissions. However, the S38 as used in the M1 supercar, the E28 and finally ending up in the E34, is a masterpiece. Back in 1980 it must have been epic.
It's delivery, the noise, the torque and the power are all incredible and all this without a single VANOS unit in sight.
How many race engines out there are that will do 200,000 miles without a rebuild?

s52b32, the Evo's engine I think the code is right
what a beautiful sound arena in the cabin to sample the aural delights of the M3, the underrated version M3 if you like
BUT
I think I'd prefer an e39 M5!
My next car if possible and they're only like 12k now for a reasonable one
The 3.2 in the Evo was/is a cracker too. However having owned both engines at the same time and comparing back to back, I'd say the S38 is the smother engine with the better power delivery and what a noise!what a beautiful sound arena in the cabin to sample the aural delights of the M3, the underrated version M3 if you like

The E39 left me a little cold. It's a brilliant car and the power is plentiful, but somehow for me the engine lacked that something special.
