321PS (misprint in the UK brochure) = approx 316bhp
That explains it. I remember the adverts all quoting 321 bhp, and also the one that claimed 170 mph and 37 mpg (not at the same time of course).

They will do 170mph + as verified on a nice long stretch of autobahn. The needle went off the clock and into the digital odometer display. So by my reckoning that was an easy 170mph taking into accout any inaccuracies.

Awesome cars.

S14B25 with 316/326 Schrick cams, 52mm sliding throttles, Carbon fibre airbox, Alpha-N, 1500rpm rough idle and 330Bhp at 9500rpm... Oh, yeshhhh...

The basic block was good for 1400+Bhp out of 1.5ltrs in the BMW Formula 1 turbo engine...

Would have to go with S54 as fitted to the M3 CSL. I saw and heard one of these at the Nurburgring, being accelerated flat out up through the box, then braking hard and throttle bliping as it came back down.

Until that point I'd dismissed the CSL as a waste of time, not worth the extra £20,000 over the standard M3. Hearing that car instantly changed my mind, that noise alone is worth the extra £20,000, I can still hear it in my mind to this day.

£20k for sounding better... come off it wouldnt you rather an M3 E46 & then a Golf GTI most people just could justify such a premium hence they bombed at launch.

Because most people couldn't care less what powers the M3 or what it stands for and thus the CSL was seen as an expensive excercise in pointlessness with less comfort.

To those who do care however, the CSL is phenominal. It's not just a slightly faster M3, it's a genuine rival to the GT3. When you think of it like that, it's a bargain!

£15k for M3 + £2k for carbon airbox/remap = £17k for CSL sound.

Nearly.

BMW are a business and if models dont sell/bomb then they are unlikely to do it again/less likely. It was a limited run too and they struggled to shift them even with huge dealer discounts.

At the end of the day as focused a car as it was most owners decided to add weight to it by adding in air con & stereo - a true GT3 rival would have no options OR suggest Sir might prefer the M3 rather than the CSL.

I pity those who bought one new and suffered the over pricing by BMW but thats life Im sure a number of speculators had their fingers burnt too.

I think it would cost you more than that to do it properly... fitting a proper airbox with free breathing would necessitate different engine management would it not?

Er, GT3s can have aircon and stereos, why would a true rival not have them as options?

You could buy the engine from ///M GmBH in 1989 in that configuration. I know because I have seen a bill of sale for one wink

OK, not really sure as I only drive the things. I suspect this price is if you keep the MAF which would keep costs down?? Not sure?
