E30 M3 More Power
Discussion
First step would be to ditch the AFM and fit and fit Maxx, Motec, or such like and for bit of added noise and power a carbon air box. This little lot will probably get you 20 ish BHP, 48mm Tb's if your on 46's, SE exhaust manifold and then the internal work will need to start. Then it's going to come down to what you wish to spend.

It all depends on what model you are running. Post 09/1989 had 215bhp engine, which used 48mm throttles and different head so it is a better starting point. And then there are the Evo models, which make a better start again.
Getting an extra 50bhp will require a substantial amount of work in any case.
Most have had good improvements by swapping to Schrick cams, 284/276 being popular, but 284/284 being an option on standard pistons. Add to this a de-cat exhaust and a carbon inlet manifold (which needs at least a piggyback unit adding to the ECU in order to run A/N) and tou will be looking at 250ish.
Any more and you are looking at head work and new pistons to allow the use of camshafts with more lift on overlap.

Hi,
all really depends on what the car is used for.
A 215bhp model with Maxx airbox mapped properly (fuel and timing), Schrick cams and say Supersprint exhaust will give you a realistic 235-240bhp.
Anymore and your looking at spending alot more money if you want it to be a nice road car.

Fast road to track - hamer all day on track and drive home again....
Is there a supercharger approach?
Not really cost effective. But forced induction has been done.... http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...Is there a supercharger approach?
If you want to hammer all day at the track and drive home then 230-240 is going to be enough. With good suspension, brakes and tyres you can just stay on the gas all day and embarass lots of nice, expensive cars........seriously, these aren't about masses of horsepower, they are about a wonderful chassis that just begs to be driven on the limit. Mines only got a measly 220 'ish, is fully trimmed but runs good suspension brakes and tyres and will lap Brands very, very respectably.
Have never owned an E30 M3 but its one of those cars i have always fancied and keep looking at every year. Was very close to buying one a few months ago until something else caught my eye.
I can therefore understand why you might be attracted to them but seems an unusual choice given your current fleet (one of which i really want to get in the next few years).

By the way, if you do feel the need for a bit more grunt. Lotec did a turbo version back in the day. There are a few of these still around and are kind of nice in a left field way. Given modern turbo technology I suspect you could take one and make a very nice car. Keeping the little 4 pot is a must as the balance is just so nice.
Thanks for this - I know they punch above their weight! Just fancy a bit extra grunt to make up for lack of driver skill!

I have 2 x 284 schricks, maxx piggy back & carbon airbox - this gives about 185 - 190 bhp at the wheels.
Also have a lower diff ratio (as GTWayne suggested) which feel like an additional 30bhp.
Car is stripped out and managed to catch & pass a reasonably driven 580bhp Skyline at Silverstone and certainly wasn't embarrassed by any car their apart from a couple of big power time attack evo's and skylines.
To get over 250bhp is not easy - 2.5 would be the way to go with high compression pistons/flowed head/my cams/maxx or omex and airbox.

Cheers,
The diff makes sense - but at what at expense to top speed? I presume there is a trade off?

Top speed will be rev limited by a shorter diff.
My redline is 7800, so if I chose to rev it all the way with a 3.64 diff my topspeed is 149.5 mph......don't know if I'd fancy revving that high for long tho.....
Seriously, what circuit can a saloon car even with 250 bhp hit over 140 in the UK?

Not sure how much power increase it made? My pal who has a z3m coupe took it to simpsons and they re-mapped it and removed the cats! He reckon its lots more torquey and responsive and is very happy with it. - £450.00 plus VAT - S50 engine same as yor evo.
Speak to Anthony or Julian @ Simpsons.
For the record it keeps up with my e46 m3 with 359.7bhp toe to toe.
