Mine is at 16 something at the moment too.
The 0ºc temps really aren't helping much, but the heated seats are nice and cosy! wink

What the OP was saying is that when his car read out 45mpg+ on his journey that the car was doing that particular MPG during THAT moment in time.

Most cars indicate such figures. I'm sure if you put a Ferrari 550 Maranello in 6th gear and trundled around at 30mph on a clear, empty road it would read a spectacular MPG figure too. But, that is only what the car is doing at THAT time. Throw in some heavy traffic, some lead-footed driving and that miraculous figure will disappear.

What a car does over an entire journey is more important rather than 'snap shot' representations of fuel economy.

Besides, let's look at the facts; 1600kg BMW, 3.2 engine, 343bhp, capable of keeping up with a Ferrari F355, will blow most cars out of the water with its performance yet it can do similar mpg figures what family saloons were doing only a decade ago and we were marevelling at their effeciency.
apologies for nitpicking but the e46 m3 having 343bhp is MYTH not FACT.

325bhp is the figure quoted from the accurate dyno operators on this forum.

sorry for detracting from the MPG conversation.

you state a 5bhp gap between eur and us models but your figures show a 10bhp gap.

sorry for being pedantic and annoying.

Well I've been suprised how economical M3's are. Saturday I drove 260 miles in my E36 Evo in 3 hours 10 mins. M1, A43 (lots of roundabouts) M40, A34, M3, M27 and some back roads. I wasn't shy and returned 29.6mpg wink The boot/back seats was full of 4 of those old-school style central heating radiators too, plus my toolkit,, SDS Drill, christmas pressies etc biggrin My average for 4 months and 6k miles is 27.2 or something.

When I got the car, I was expecting really low 20's!

Brilliant all rounders these things smile

I put that the US cars were 5bhp down and then went off to check, as I was not sure if it was 5 or more, then forgot to change it before replying.

The top speed is also listed as 185mph. Whether the M3 has a 155mph restrictor or not, there is no way that 340bhp (ish) is enough to push the car to that speed.

Wiki is a nice easy source of information, however I'm never happy to take it as FACT!

Think yourselves lucky, the RX8 does 20mpg on a good day but then it only cost me £46 to fill it up yesterday which is a bonus.

I hope to get an M3 or M5 some day so at least I will be used to the full consumption.

Agreed but the E36 M3 is better on fuel than the E46; bit lighter and I suspect slightly longer gearing as well.
