Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

My views on the badges haven't changed a bit since I got an "M",I had the same views in 1997 when I had a nova!
Badges used in the wrong way are funny to me, on all cars, not just BMW

See above, you'll see that posts are from lots of people but as this is the M Power forum, you have to expect people with M cars or an interest in them to post.

Why they're being discussed in the M Power section of the forum is a whole different thing.

I don't take things personally, this is the internet, the sole purpose of the internet is to amuse me. It should be the same for you. Life's too short to get upset about stuff on here. People putting badges on things that they are not amuses me and clearly hundreds of people on the multitude of pages on this subject agree. BTW, My M5 in 9.5 (ish) years old, 7 years old when I bought it (Cash cos there wasn't any threads on here about the best deals for credit on a 7 year old M5)
If people put Ferrari badges on Fiats, I'd find that funny as well as cats chasing the light from a laser pointer.

If someone wants to badge their 316 as an M car then so be it. It's a bit like when I used to fit clip-ons and a Micron on my RD50 Yamaha, to try and make it look a bit more like the RD400 I lusted after. It's all pretty harmless really. I guess the M badge has just been around long enough for even those with a minimal interest in cars, to know it suggests increased kudos and performance, even if they're not entirely sure why? I mean, even Halfrauds sell their own version.

Had various later generations since and now a z4m but still pine for the original and best.Rather embarrassingly I stuck an alpina badge (and alpina spoiler and wheels) on an e30 325i I had. Oh dear... Not sure what that makes me!

The //M badges on cars do not bother me in the slightest, i must admit it has grown on me, I think BMW are onto a winner with it nowadays.
In regards to the 1M, BMW need to update their marketing material and start to look to include it in the M section.
What bothers me, or to be honest properly concerns me, is people that buy a 320d, then buy a M3/5/6 body kit for the best part of 5k and stick it on. Are they utterly insane?
