Why do people put "M" badges on non-M cars?

There are so many M badges on non-M cars that this thread is akin to taking photos of a labrador or a Tesco lorry. You see one every time you go out in the car. So this thread is not funny unless you are subnormal.
I must be subnormal then You don't have to read it BTW...

Actually no badges at all on this M5.
So why have you put the picture in this "M badge" thread?!?One thing's for sure it's certainly not to show off the quality of your camera and/or picture taking skills...

personally i think this thread should be made a sticky
And since I'm on the subject of the removal of badges I think that the reverse snobbery of removing the M badge from an M car is worse than sticking an M badge on a non-M car. It seems that everyone who has done it has to subsequently boast about it. Is having a de-badged M car the ultimate in M ownership?

Is it me, does it annoy you seeing an m badge knowing it's not an m3/m4 etc?
I've seen a 320d in Woking with a random m badge stuck on kidney grill which was terrible.
Then seen a new convertible, which was an m in drag- given it had only 2 exhausts.
I just don't understand why you would do it. If people know what an m is and can tell/appreciate it they will know it's a fraud or an m in drag- and for everyone else they won't even care.
I prefer model deletion that I did on my 320d E90, and now have done same on my z4 35i etc - but I would love the M badge, when I can buy a nice M - not an m sport.
That's quite amusing as "model deletion" is essentially the same thing as sticking an M badge on a car that's not an M car. Both actions are trying to tell the onlooker that the car is something it's not.I've seen a 320d in Woking with a random m badge stuck on kidney grill which was terrible.

Just wondered what the mentality is?
Guy drove past me yesterday on the motorway in a very nice white 3 series, 58 plate, coupe, had an "M3" badge on the back. No carbon roof, no bonnet bulge and more importantly a single exhaust pipe.
Anybody who doesn't know much about cars will think "that's a nice car" and won't have a clue what an "M" is, anybody who does know will look and think "you're sad".
So why do people do it, if you don't want to advertise it's a 320D or whatever then get the badge removed and have it with nothing on, don't try and make it something it isn't!
My 335D was DMS remapped to 340 bhp and 525 lbft and I put a 320D badge on the back, so I did the opposite.Guy drove past me yesterday on the motorway in a very nice white 3 series, 58 plate, coupe, had an "M3" badge on the back. Oh, the fun I had with the hot hatch boys and I astonished a few Civic Type R and the like pilots!

That one looks like someone's gone to a fair bit of trouble - quad exhausts, mirrors and even front wings.
Quad exhausts would be the only real effort there, the front wings are SE wings, the vents are just stuck on!!!Baz Tench said:
I know someone who did this. He runs his own bodyshop.
The car?
E46 318 touring.
ETA: It was his own car, not a customers.
You'd think that he'd at least have some decency, what with owning a bodyshop and all!The car?
