Here is a vid of my M6 on the autobahn...if you look at the fuel gauge you will see that it actually drops 1/8 of a tank in less the four mins............

Impressive - what car were you chasing there?http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTMKkPxei0I
To return to the original subject I've had my E61 M5 for about two months. After a mix of town, A-road and motorway driving with some fun my average on the computer is 18.3mpg, a little worse than the E39 M5 I had but not as bad as I feared after the first day or two.
Even a half hour test drive gave no real idea of what it was going to be like. It's definitely much faster than my E39 and probably faster than my Tuscan.

An entirely reasonable figure, given it's more than what my B10 V8 Touring shows on its computer!Horror stories of <15 mpg averages put me off the V10s but anything above is almost reasonable for those used to powering a good helping of cylinders.
Had my M6 for 18 months now, present mpg is 8; I did manage 10mpg yesterday on 30 mile round trip; although i've had 28 on a summer motorway run, I think it's the thirstiest car i've owned (just), but that's probably down to tank size, which is the only complaint I have (along with all owners); as mentioned by others, fuel economy is nothing in comparison to depreciation. Gearbox takes time to learn how to use properly, but once you do you'll get frustrated by negative comments on it.
I can't even consider a 911, as I have two kids in car seats; other than cabin space I can't think why i'd get rid; although thoughts stray from time to time, ultimately I think I'll keep it. They're great cars, which are phenominal when required & understated when needed.
Plus side of tank size - you won't be standing filling up for ages!!

Your furl numbers are very similar to mine.. I have had mine since June of 2006, though it only has 18,000 miles and agree with all your comments.I can't even consider a 911, as I have two kids in car seats; other than cabin space I can't think why i'd get rid; although thoughts stray from time to time, ultimately I think I'll keep it. I ran an e60 m5 for 2 years and 30,000 miles and at the end of all of that the obc read around 19mpg.
Sure I saw a worst of 7mpg (in fact couldnt get it lower than that) but you have to be really pressing on to do that, or sit in traffic on the m25 all day. But lets face it, most of the time you are bobbing along with the rest of the traffic.

I don't think computer goes below 7; don't get me wrong, my journey to work is worst run you can get, my previous 4.8is X5 got 9.9mpg to work, it's only a mile or so from home, so not too concerned personally (more bothered that wifes V50 2.0d is only getting 33!!!)Sure I saw a worst of 7mpg (in fact couldnt get it lower than that) but you have to be really pressing on to do that, or sit in traffic on the m25 all day. Can't remember what last winter mpg was, but I've got Pirelli winter tyres on at moment - might make a difference??

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm a great fan of the 5.0 v10 and the practicality of the M6/M5 but I know it's going to be stupidly expensive to run in terms of fuel and servicing which the 996 turbo won't have. I'm in love with that engine though, can't get the sound out of my head after the test drive.
..and the nicest thing to do with the noise is to liberate it's more hair tingling timbre with an appropriate exhaust system. Eisenmann fan myself.Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
