Breadvan. During my (all too brief) drive a while back I too felt the body control was v good. Superb though the M3 is you're still dealing with quite a heavy saloon at the end of the day and that feeling of fighting a mass isn't there in the 1M is it. Any more thoughts after your first few days?

Keep the M3
They are good but not that good
Dave - no sarcasm intended - have you driven both? A few guys over on 1addicts who appear to, *really* like their 1Ms - but obviously it all comes down to what you want from the car.
As above, not meaning to be rude but have you driven both? Two quite different cars. Depending on what you want from a car the 1M could be considered the 'better' car - by a long way. And of course visa versa. Drive both and decide.

I've driven the E92 V8 and was looking at the 1m last friday as a friend came down with his , it was wet so didn't drive.
It's a lovely looking car, and you are correct both quite different, however if you already own a V8, i'd struggle to ratinalise the purchase of what I perceive to be the nicer car to own.

The E92 V8 in the 1M? A bit like the 3.5 6 cylinder Alpina B6S in the 4 cylinder 2.3 engined E30 M3 shell -perhaps a bit nose heavy.

I see the M3 as a very sporty GT really so my combo would be either M3 plus something like a Caterham OR 1M and say an X5. Of course either one of them would make a brill 'only car' too.

I'm lucky (very) to be able to have a fair few cars and I want the 1M for a specific purpose - as explained way back in the early days of this thread - so the reasons for my choice my be a little different to those of others. But then, how boring if we were all the same.

Car arrives next weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The M3 V8 is remarkably light as its all alloy so was IIRC lighter than the older S54 straight 6, not sure on the weight of the later 3.0 twin turbo motor in the 1m as i think that is all alloy as well.

The V8 and DCT box in a 1M would be a fun combination.

Just had the pleasure of driving a 1M briefly up in the Scottish Highlands while on the PhN tour.

Have to say, I was very impressed. Very different to how my Z4MC feels, much more about the mid range, but it certainly is an M car.

Also looks the nuts on the road (its white) so now smitten. Now saving to hopefully pick up a used one in a years time for the gf and to use as the daily driver and future family wagon... Who needs 4 doors! :-)

Have driven both and would not swap my e92 for a 1m.It is a great car,and very nippy with good economy compared to the e92 so as a daily driver would make more sense. To have the option of paddle shift on the 135 and not the 1m is a pcensoreds take as even with it it would not be an e92 m3 but would have improved it no end.I was impressed at how it still pulled hard at the top end of the rev range and the steering felt good too.I used to be a gear stick only person but after driving the csl and the e92 the paddles have grown on me too much. The 1m was like driving a manual hot hatch a few years ago which is not a bad thing but it is not my cup of tea.If the e92 m3 was not an option then i would be happy to own one but then i would probably look for a mint csl for the paddle shift.

My friend phil (nieue)is lucky enough to have a few cars including the 1m and e92 m3 and is of the same opinion as me that the m3 is more of an event to drive, the v8 noise paddles power delivery etc.HE bought the 1m as his daily drive and it does this extremely well.

As already said its personal choices and opinions but from initial drives that is my thoughts.

The 1M im the 'orange' spotted this afternoon in Moseley, Birmingham, looked and sounded good, a lot louder than I though it would. I was in the black 123 coupe with his head hanging out the drivers window, trying to get a good look/listen!

Had a good look around a Black Sapphire M Coupe at Stephen James in Blackheath. Really nicely proportioned car.

Picked up a black 1M with 1000mls on the clock today (4 day test drive from Sytner BMW).

Only had a chance to drive home so will report back in more detail over the next couple of days.

If first impressions are anything to go buy, this is a GREAT car. I was a little worried it may be a bit too similar to my 135i but don't think this is at all the case. Definitely feels special, love the interior, acceleration is phenomenal (can only imagine what you could do with some tuning!!).

Likely to swap my e46 csl for a 1m if today is anything to go by, but will need to give it another 24-48 hours before finalising a decision.

Definitely. Must admit i was getting a bit nervous that it was going to be too similar to my 135i but absolutely no danger of that. Drove in this morning and seriously impressed.

Shame that i'll be trading in my 135i at a lowish trade-in but the child in me is getting excited about the prospect of owning a 1M!

I think quite a number of the 1M's are from traded in 135i, so I guess values will be less for a while as dealers will have a larger than usual stock of them in the system....?

Probably only the newer DCT 135's won't so as affected as much as the 1M is MT only.

I'm hoping the next gen 1M (most likely called a M2) will be want I'll be trading in my 135i for in 3-4 years time smile

Why would they call it an M2? Is the next one series going to be the 2 series?

The rumour is that the next gen 1 Series due out in Sept this year will keep the 1 Series name for the hatch versions, and that when the 'new' hatch and ragtop versions of it come out 18 months or so later, that BMW will use the 2 Series name for the Coupe and Ragtop versions..... in a similar way that the 6 Series is a coupe version of the 5 Series.

My subscribers edition of Evo just dropped onto the doormat. There is a lot of 1M content:

16 page group test vs Cayman R, Nissan 370ZGT and TTRS. The 1M and Cayman get 5 stars, 370 4 1/2, TTRS 4 stars. The test included their traditional lap times round Bedford Autodrome's West circuit - Cayman 1.25.5, 1M, 1.25.9, 370Z 1.27.1, TTRS, 1.27.3. Summary quote: "The 1-series M sets a new benchmark for only-car, multi-purpose, real-life ability and desireability".

3 page 1M vs E92 M3 - "The M3 is an absolutely wonderful thing. The 1M is even better".

yikes

not bad pace compared to cayman considering the back seats and considerably cheaper IIRC. whether i'd take it over an M3 i don't know....

Ross.
