I think they're probably just being hopeful.

It's not an unreasonable guess - the E46 had the CSL and the E92 had the GTS and I believe was it the CRT?

A lighter-weight, slightly more hardcore version seems obvious. Probably even more necessary than the previous generations too as both the base E46 and E92 seemed quite well received.

In fact, if memory serves I believe the CSL and GTS both got slated for being "too much money for not enough" and in subsequent years have gone on to hold their value extremely well where the cooking version depreciates as normal.

More concerned about them thinking the M4 is better on a track than on the road. I thought it was a road car.
