I had a punt on a 997 Turbo, tried both the tip and manual and preferred my GT3.

I took a chance on the CSL and it cost me --- what are the chances of an R8 being beter ?

It looks lovely, is probably fast enough and I reckon that Audi are really comng up.

I went CSL > 911 TT > 911 GT3 RS > M5 > RS4 > 911 C2S (997) > 911 Turbo (997)

Really couldn't decide!

For me it would only be the 997 RS if i had to buy know. I don't have to buy know because i cant afford 95k and i love my CSL to much. So, picture this. The year?...2009/10, The colour?...White, The car?...CSL.
It will be minimum 65k after all the goodies, hopefuuly BMW may offer a special track options list? How many of us would tick the options list if it said body coloured roll cage? or racing seat/harness?

BMW have the potential and know how to create a genuine RS beater. The standard V8 M3 will be an all round machine of utter brilliance no doubt, so come on BMW give us the car we all want without having to tweak this and that to make it beat porsche, all you have to do is put it on an options list if its too hardcore!!

Maybe they will get the brakes right second time around ?

And an engine specced at 400 but giving 420 would be so very reassuring ...

I have to stick up for BMW for a minute. The brakes they fit are actually well up to the job, for 95% of the buyers (like fat American dimwits, et al). The problem only manifests itself when you venture on track and the pads turn to cheese in 3 laps. The cynical shites can then point you to the unfortunate truth that you bought a road car, not a racer....

Balls to that Munich, fit the car with propper stoppers, you mugs!

Maybe what's best is a car for the road and another one for the track, then no compromises need take place or at least far fewer. Even cars like a CSL are highly compromised compared to a proper racing car.
I just bought a Westfield Seight for my trackday fun this year, leaving the CSL and whatever thereafter replaces it to do the road yards.
Westy = 210 bhp. 230 lbs-ft. 595kgs. Should be quick!

But even my Boxster shirked off 20 laps of Donnington Park in batches of 5 --- even if I did go through ha;f a new set of tyres.

Who would claim a Boxster to be a track car ?

How little does it cost to overspec these items at the point of manufacture ?

More cynical shites would then point out that most are not well driven, and that the brakes would cope a lot better with a professional driver

I'm about to sell my CSL (couldn't resist a decent offer). Considering 997 GT3 Clubsport as the only car in the current production lineup that would fill its shoes IMO. I find the GT3 RS is a bit too expensive and extreme to compare with the CSL. I hope BMW builds another CSL but with Clubsport like option in a few years. Unfortunately, they don't show off their hands.

What did you get for your CSL and how many miles did it have on it?

i went CSL > 996 gt3 plus a fiat punto for round town. GT3 is quicker and better handling but only marginally so and with none of the csls practicalities.I do miss my csl , it was the ultimate saloon missile, i tried an RS4 after and it sucked by comparison as a drivers tool.
