Secondhand M3CS's are worth more than CSL's --- now what does that say ?

..They are newer?
Many CS owners have been convinced by the BMW dealers that the car is everything the CSL is an more when if fact the CS is just an end of line "special".

Many of the CSL's are low mileage and have been loved.

All that has been said is correct.

Is the only logical conclusion that nice ones must start increasing in value ?

P.S. Have you ever seated yourself in the back of a CSL ? Minimalistic is an understatement, and vomit bags are not provided.

Has this ever happened before to a production car (Sporting version of a mass produced production car)?
I think the CSL will contine to depreciate for some time yet.
Sub £30K cars are rare at the moment when openly advertised, but some BMW dealers are alredy offering under £25K for PX at 30K miles.
I don't think the CSL will bottom out until it is down to £15K and this will be a few years away yet.
Weren't E30 M3's originally around £30K new back in the 1980's. Nice examples of these are only making £10K

Having progressed from a CSL to a mk2 996 gt3 i can say without a shadow of a doubt that the CSL is a great great car but as a driving experience the Gt3 is in a different class,on paper the performance and power figures are similar but in reality the gt3s engine feels much more muscular, sound is subjective yes , and the csl does make a great noise from the front end or the drivers seat but is sorely lacking at the tail pipes with the standard m3s tinny rasp, the only downside to the gt3 is the practicality side, the csl beats it hands down with two extra seats and a boot, however im glad i dont have to stick m8s in the back of my gt3 as it alwways feels light and sharp, two peeps in the back of my csl and all the extra performance over a standard bimmer was gone anyway so who cares ?

Rarity and ability will keep the CSL values high.
