Solid as a rock now, reckon he welded at least 15kg of metal in there. Im going to just jack it up on the sills for the sake of it I think.

I currently have a mk1 with very rusty inner & outer sills sitting in my garage. Can anyone recommend somewhere in the west mids to get them sorted? Also, what sort of money should I expect to pay?

There is a chap on here based in Solihull, can't remember his username - check the Wiki at the top of the MX-5 section. Don't know if he does bodywork but he may well know somebody.

Hello chaps, after posting in this forum for a couple of years, I've finally picked up a 1995 G-Limited in Satellite Blue Mica, with hardtop. She's very nice indeed, with the only immediate job being slow windows, but unfortunately her arches are a touch rusty. I don't have the funds to do her this month (I, the driver, require a root canal instead) - will she degrade quickly or do I have time? Could anyone estimate the cost - I was thinking around £300. Also, anyone know what wheels I have? 15 inchers.

I would guess good jobs on that rust would be at least £500
However, get it done properly once and you should never have to worry about it again provided you keep on top of clearing the drain holes every once in a while. And its a very, very good selling point should you ever need to sell the car especially if you have photos/ documentation of the work.

Thanks for the responses. A real bugger but then I hope to keep the car for a long time. The post above states that done once this shouldn't have to be done again - is this because the metal they will use in the replacement won't corrode?
The rust is in a strange place, running in vertical-ish lines on each arch - could that be caused by the drainage holes being blocked, or is it a usual place for rot?
ETA: anywhere that is particularly recommended in Surrey?

On the sill that can be seen on the posted pictures, it looks to me like they might have already been welded once but not a very good job so it's started going again.
Weld will always rust quicker than virgin metal unless it's properly treated. A good welding job would include cutting away all rust in the inner sills and the strengthening panels with everything being rust-proofed before it was all sealed up to put off the onset of further rust. A cheap job would just be cutting out the outer panel, welding over a new one without dealing with the damage behind and just filling/painting the outside to cover it all up.

Good spot Lazza, they indeed have been done previously! Probably about 5 years ago mind.
