We have a 54 plate Mk2, the one thing it lacks is remote locking. Is it something thats easy to fit?

MX5Parts do a kit, but it appears that there are no fitting instructions and the reviews say it's not the easiest process. It's a pretty cheap kit though, quite tempted myself.

I fitted remote central locking to a Micra some 15 year ago (for my wife!!). It was a universal kit, so could be fitted to any car. From memory it wasn't too difficult to get this to work - at the time I had to fit a dedicated alarm to make the remote locking work.

Not sure about the mx5parts one - but anything I have brought from them has usually had good fitting instructions or their support over the phone can also be good. (specifically their istructions for fitting alternative headrest speakers was excellent!)

Does that help? Probably not...

If your car already has central locking and you just want to add a remote, this kit will do the trick. The MX5 parts kit linked above is overkill if your doors already have the actuators.

I fitted remote central locking to my Mk1 with a kit from these guys and it works like a charm.
I'm about to do the same as you, fit remote locking to a Mk2, and will be glad to not have to fiddle around trying to get the cables for the actuators through the door seals smile

I fitted remote central locking to my mk1 which didnt have central locking to start off with. the main difficulty was the wiring as there wasn't any proper circuitry in place to tap into. i cut into the hazard light circuit if memory serves me correctly. I got a kit off ebay for ~£30 works well although i had to replace one actuator after 4yrs ~£3 the mechanical aspects were quite easy if you are good at that kind of thing. the electrical not so- not because of any real complication (assuming you are au fait with electrics), but more for the fact that you have to do the work up-side-down with your head in the foot well. My back was not very happy after that.

Thanks, yes it does have central locking.

How easy are they to fit? Do you need to get into the doors, or does it just tap into the existing central looking wiring?

I started fitting the kit to a Mk2 last night, hoping that it would be a case of splicing into a couple of wires and mounting the control unit somewhere convenient under the dash.
Turns out that the Mk2 doesn't actually have a solenoid for operating the driver's door lock, just a simple sensor for activating the passenger lock when the key is turned in the driver's door. This means I will have to fiddle around mounting and wiring in a solenoid to the driver's door. banghead

I believe that the Mk2.5 (which is what yours will be, if it's a 2004 car) does have a solenoid in the driver's door which means you'll (probably) not have to take the door cards off and fit solenoids. An easy way to check is to try unlocking the car from the passenger side. If the driver's door unlocks as well then you've got a solenoid in both doors.

I know this is an old thread guys, but I am in the throes of fitting a keyless entry system to my 2001 mk2 (or could it be 2.5?)
I am having great difficulty with fitting additional actuator to the drivers door since the lock rods are not there but seem to have been replaced by flexible cables....like bike brake cables.
So I cannot clamp the rod supplied with the actuator to these cables. Any suggestions? Also would like some info on wiring for actuator in door and for control unit. I bought it from rightclick. Just want it as keyless door entry system not bothered about connecting boot lid etc.
