Well it's taken its time as I decided to have some panels resprayed first but I have just received my cobalt exhaust system, fitting next week, looking forward to it.

Me too, fitting after it's had an MOT next saturday - hopefully the list of other work will be minimal!

Well after trying a second garage, the centre section as about three inches too long, gutted!!! Got to send it back tommorow. Really not sure what the issue was there, but I had a look and it wasn't going on.

What year is you car again?

You might be able to switch the cat to a shorter version and then you are set.

I have the cobalt on my 1997 UK car and i changed the downpipe to a '95 version and a 440mm cat and it fits.

Well, it has no wiring for a lambda sensor so I guess it shouldn't have a cat it's a 1991 1.6 uk car. That's what the garage said but it has a cat on it. Could it be that if I stuck a shorter cat on it would work?

Hi

I recently had the exhaust replace on my 1993 mx5 mk1.....twice!! The first time it was making a horrible clattering noise, the second time and now still it vibrates in every gear on acceleration....garage says they don’t know why, but they did use quite a cheap replacement. Any offers of advice? I have paid to have this one put on and now they are saying there isn’t much they can do, so it looks like I’ll have to fork out for another exhaust researched by myself...grrr

Hi, for clattering/rattly noises there are 2 othr things to check. The heatshield on the exhaust manifold breaks some of its weld over time and starts to rattle about, can be replaced, removed, rewelded or tied down with wire. Also the catalyst has an outer heatshield, similar problem, comes loose and rattles.

Could also be broken internals in the cat. Rare and harder to check but if you get the odd episode of rough running it could be blocking up your exhaust.

I've had an MX5Parts twin pipe on my last 2 mk1s and both the little angle bracket things that are welded from the silencer box to the tailpipes have come loose over time and rattled really loudly, and I've also had the headshield above the cat make some odd noises, and the one on the exhaust manifold / downpipe which almost fell right off.

Try grabbing the tailpipe and shaking it around, or tap it with a rubber mallet - maybe you can work out whats rattling, it was certainly obvious on mine.
