There's nothing that drives me mad about the MX5. I love everything about it. It is my pride and joy. I could drive it 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and rest on 29th February every leap year. If I could only stay awake!!!!

The notchy/stiff gearbox when cold...all forgotten when roof down and car fully to temp.

For me it has to be the wind / tyre noise at 60mph +, I must be getting old. I have some nice headrest speakers now, so not so annoying anymore smile

Mot exactly practical for my other hobby- mountain biking. The bike rack I have is good but it's a right old performance to put it on.

The top of my head is a bit to far from the ground so I can't really drive it with the roof up, but that's no great hardship, just avoid/outrun the rain.
Oh and the electric windows are a bit slow.

And a good quality full synthetic oil will sort most of it.

A 2 minute google search tells me they have a reputation for it as well!

A 20 minute drive to work in mine this morning would indicate otherwise, but I guess a sample of one isn't conclusive.

I'm sure they aren't all that way, and neither are all MX5s, RX8s, S2000s, M3s, GT3s etc.

I was more commenting on how it seems a common theme for cars with nice gearboxes to also have at least some reputation for being notchy when cold.

I guess one man's tight and precise is another man's stiff and notchy! Gearbox-wise.

That's true enough. My Eunos is definitely a bit clunky when cold though. I should probably do an oil change and use it a bit more.

Being underpowered. It's frustrating but the feel of them is good enough to make you work for it.
