Locked out of mk1 MX5 Boot Help!!!

Putting car back together after giving the the paint a spruce up my wee cousin shut the boot without checking it'd open and now won't open.
Internal release beside the fuel release isn't working. Key isn't working either (both did before). Thinking that the rods or whatever aren't connected to the lock or something. I can here movement but there is no resistance when pulling or turning.
Considering drilling a 25mm in rear panel to access lock behind the number plate unless there is a less destructive process can someone PM me please???
