Hi All , I'm after a bit of advice with my girlfriend's 2004 mk2.5 mx5 1.6 - she's only just got it, so I'm not up to speed with it yet!

The front right caliper is sticking, and from the depths of t'internet I've gleaned there's a big brake kit commonly fitted to 1.8 sport's, however I don't know if it was an option on the other models?

Basically I'm asking if there's any way the big brake kit would be fitted to a 1.6 euphonic. The discs are measuring about 21mm thick at the thickest point, however I'm not sure if that's a worn 22mm disc or a rust-encrusted 20mm disc.

It's the diameter you need to check. Standard brakes are 255mm and that is what you will most likely have. A few special editions did get the big brake upgrade but I've only heard of them being fitted to 1.8s.

Hi,

I have a 1.6l Euphonic myself and am in the process of upgrading my brakes.

Although no one can seem to be definite if the 1.6l has the 255mm or the 270mm, i have had a rough measure of mine and it is closer to 270mm.

Have you managed to measure yours yet?

If not, i am going to take the wheel off and measure mine to make 100% sure.

If you haven't i will let you know my outcome.

I found that the 270mm brake must have been a factory option - her 1.6 did turn out to have the 270mm kit after all. I managed to get a good measure by taking the wheel off and offering up a tape measure, you only need to k ow of it's bigger or smaller anyhow.

If you Haven’t got callipers yet these are worth a look

On a slight deviation , did my pads over the weekend , callipers were done last year , and I found one of the slider bolts seized , it took a bit of getting out , but cleaned up and a light greasing all is well ,and was also a cure for what I thought was a spongy brake peddle due to air in system.
What did concern me was the recommended torque setting for the slider / calliper bolts ie 78/88nm
I set 2 different torque wrenches to this setting and with both I felt I was on the cusp of stripping the threads , so at present the bolts are tight but may be a touch short of 78nm. Car is in for MOT at my local Mazda dealer in 2 weeks time so a chat is in order
