I think Mk1's take 6.5" speakers in the front as standard. I used ~£30 JVC 2-ways and put dynamat on the inside door skin and made a gasket style seal in between the speaker and door mounting. They sound very good considering the cost, clear and loud with no vibrations.

I have expensive £100+ Infinity component's in my MK2 but no dynamat, they sound rubbish in comparison.

Thank you that is helpful,

What did you fit on the rear shelf please?, I do have a roll bar fitted does that cause a problem?

Focal 165mm (6.5") co-axials in the doors and 100mm (4") in the rear shelf in my mk1. Alpine head unit with a tiny KTP-445 amp that fits behind the dash. Did the doors properly, dynamatted etc. Rear deck just cut holes (remove it first to ensure you avoid the fuel tank!) and self-tapped through the carpet. The rear deck speakers just provide a bit of fill, better with the roof up as it partially covers them when down but they do make a difference IMO. N.B. I don't have a roll bar, just a cabin brace, and my speakers are roughly where the cut-outs for the rollbar uprights would be, I think. However, you could get away without them and there may be clearance anyway if you have a look under the deck. Alternatively, what seats have you got, headrest speakers might be an option?

The important thing is it goes loud enough to be heard at speed with the roof down!

I put a load of dynamat on my doors and fitted some display model JBL GTO's from halfords (Reduced from £50 to £15!) and they are perfect. I think the mat makes the biggest difference and would start there tbh. After that i would look for speakers with a decent RMS - it gets noisy with the roof down at speed wink

I also have a slimline pioneer 6" sub unit behind my seat which fills in the low/mid range very nicely without being overbearing or taking up any space.
