Has anyone gutted the cat on a MK2.5? How has it affected the running and noise of the car?

I'm ironing out some running problems and suspect the cat is on it's way out and/or blocked. Until I can be sure that I've cured an intermittent misfire which would contribute to this (dumping fuel into the exhaust is never a good thing for a cat) I'm wondering about gutting the cat. I don't want to replace the cat with a new one until I can be sure it won't be affected by the other things going on, but equally, I don't want to be running with a blocked cat as it'll only hinder and affect the work I'm doing.

I'm thinking of gutting it and then sleeving it inside so it becomes a straight-through. I would buy a cat-bypass in the meantime, but noone seems to make them for the MK2.5 as it is new enough to require a type-approved cat.

Where are you? I have an empty 2001 Mk2.5 cat in my garage in Wokingham.
