Someone seems to have left an MX5 in our communal yard at work so I wondered over for a poke around as I'm starting to get the itch.....
It's been left open so I got in, seat back as far as poss, tried to shut door and it bounced off my knee which was tight against the steering wheel. Not a good start, but begs the questions:
Is it easy enough to remove an airbagged wheel and replace with smaller?
Did they ever come with adjustable wheels?
Any other tips as to how a 6'2" bloke can drive an MX5 or should I just give it a miss (or try one for a while)?

Oh and how do you open the boot? Couldn't see the release anywhere.

Are transmissions very strong at high power levels? Couldn't help but notice how easy it will be to turbo it (also did a bit of internet research) so that's the route i'll probably go (If I can fit in one) as it's what I do for a living anyhow.

Yes you can remove an airbag wheel. Disconnect the battery and leave for a half hour to ensure safe and then remove. You can fit a smaller wheel but if no airbag will possibly affect MOT because of warning light but original wheel could be refitted.

First thing most try is removing some of the foam from the seat so you sit lower.

Release in centre console compartment behind your elbow next to fuel cap release.

Many tuned examples. Weaknesses tend to run clutch, diff, gearbox in ascending order. Not usually an issue until you hit 180hp+

Thanks for the reply, I wonder how much power the 'box and diff will take and what the initials NB, NC, ND actually stand for?

Which year is the car you sat in and do you have any idea which model it is?

I'm 6ft1 and have an NA with NB seats. Easily fit in and can happily drive 500 miles in a day. My steering wheel has the airbag in. Haven't tried any other models though.

I'm around 6ft 4 and have a Mk2, I needed a dished wheel in order to fit my legs into the car, see below pic to give an idea of the room a dished wheel gives. With the seat all the way back I have plenty of room!

I'm 6 ft 3 and owned a Mk 1 MX-5 for 6 years. Never had a problem fitting in it or any other MX-5. (Fitted me slightly better than the Boxster I have now if truth be told!) Only problem for tall buggers like me is that the seat could have been slightly lower. You have the awkward choice - do you look under or over the windscreen frame? Either is a bit of a stretch.

I'm a lanky 6'4" & just did a foamectomy on my late mk1 to give a little more headroom. The steering wheel change would be nice but I have no power steering so kept the standard wheel.
