Interesting thread. Looking to the future I'm asking myself the same, and struggling.

My wife's NC1 PRHT has fallen into my hands, and been on daily duties. I could see it being retired to occasional duties, but what to take its place? I love the MX-5's rough-diamond attitude, so the above posts steer me towards the Z.

TVR Chimaera.

My mates always took the piss out of mine as a big MX5, so you might as well go for it.

And there's the same rusty chassis issues, so you'll feel right at home.

OP, it sounds like you need an extra car.
Keep the mx and enjoy its na thrash, lightweight fun.
Then get a cheap hot hatch while saving for a Caterham.

Bit of a bump...I noticed the EP3 vs MX5 theme above.

I sold my old NB MX5 1.8 to my best mate a couple of years back. The car was a cracker, far and away the best one I'd driven in over 6 months of looking at the time. Anyway, you get the idea - it was a good 'un.

Fast forward to a couple of weekends ago, when I drove my old '5 again, after having been driving an EP3 CTR for the past few months - bought it to scratch an itch. The EP3 has Eibach springs, and the full geo setup - inc camber bolts etc, a Tegiwa intake and a good set of Bridgestones.

I was a bit apprehensive, because I didn't want to come away feeling like I'd taken a backward step. Turns out I hadn't.

There it is - I jumped out an MX5 and into an EP3 and didn't feel short changed smile

I'll start running from the hounds....

Edit: I should probably qualify the above by saying that, imo, a bog standard EP3 is fairly underwhelming.

I'm currently looking for an mx5 again. I sold my NA6 years ago and got an S2000 - never thought it was as good as the Mazda. Can't wait to get in one again

I am lucky enough to have a couple of other cars apart from my MK1 Eunos 1600 ( which is 99% standard and used for sprints / hillclimbs ) One weighs 450kgs and has an R1 bike engine, another is an MSA log booked rally car, another is a '71 Swiftune mini with 120bhp. BUT I can honestly say there is something about absolutely ragging the absolute **** out of my MX5 that I can honestly say is as much fun as any of the others can deliver, and I am not joking.....
Another friend has a MK1 Mexico and an MK2 RS2000, and he reckons his girlfriend's MX5 is genuinly as much fun!

I had a Mint Boxster S and 205 Gti which I would not choose to take to the Alps and back over my little Eunos...

If you can try and hang on to your MX5 if you can, tuck it away, because I suspect you will miss it....
