My son has a mk1 1997 in classic red . There is rear wheel arch rust to cope with but a partial / maybe full respray will be required . Anyone had this work done and any ideas on costs ?

If it were my car, I'd take the car down to Gareth and Chris here: http://www.themx5restorer.co.uk/ . They'll give you a realistic quote.

Their work is excellent - just take a look at one of their show cars. Both are well known within the MX-5 community.

Prices to restore arches on the Mx5 restorers website - but its from £720 a side.
Feels a bit expensive but they are very highly rated, case of you get what you pay for?

I did a little research on a full respray myself (admittedly just on google). Anywhere from £1k upwards, with some folk suggesting £4k upwards for a decent job, thats without any welding...

I suspect fixing the arches with a localised spray job is probably the way to go!!

Gareth does a proper job with no corners cut. Cutting out all the rust, rebuilding all the inner & outer arch, inner sill, strengthening ribs & outer sill, all sprayed up to a top standard and fully undersealed inside all the crevices to make sure the rust does not come back. They even take pictures through the whole process and offer a full guarantee!
You can get it done at a local welders and I'm sure some would do an equally good job but MX5 Restorer has the reputation and are known to do top quality work.

Mine had both rear arches, sills done and a complete respray. It wasn't the cheapest but i was very happy with the respray. If its a keeper i think its a good investment.

See you are in Herts, where did you have it done?

Sorry i must of had a brain fart and forgot to mention that it was also the Mx5 Restorer that did mine. Its a bit of a drive but its worth it as the results are always decent which is rare in my experience.
