There are lots of places the water can get in and it can "hide" under the carpets easily. If the drain tubes are blocked, water will run through the chassis and into the wells behind the seats and into the sills. If the sill drains are also blocked then it can overflow into the cabin but this will be under the carpet. The carpet is waterproof plastic backed so dry above the carpet does not mean dry under it.
Also check in the boot...

Do you mean the drain tubes behind the seats, by the seat belt towers?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes.

Drain tubes behind the seats.
Sill drain points.
Cracked rain rail.
Shrunk hood.
Door/window seals not sealing.
Aerial seal leaking.
Rear lights seals crumbling.

Are just the most obvious places water can get in. There are plenty of others.

I left my M3 outside in the bad weather we had a few weeks ago, couldn't believe how wet it was in there, it's sorn at the moment so I've parked it in my mother in laws garage with the windows open and the roof cracked open a bit in the hope it'll dry out fully then i'll follow the drain channel advice in this thread

I know its a massive ask, but when you next happen to be working on your MX5 I wonder if you could be so kind as to post photos of tall the places to look. Dont worry if you dont have time, just thought I'd ask
Many thanks

Thanks MX5 Lazza! That's great. I'm going to have to hunt out the seals under the car.

Now what about the boot lights - what do I check to find out why my booty is all mouldy and damp? (sorry pic is upside down)theres constantly a layer of condensation on the inside of the boot. I've had mechanic take the panels out last year and they couldnt find any water but its getting in somehow.

This feels like a never ending job!

Tail light seals, aerial seal & the boot seal itself need to be checked but bear in mind that the boot space is open into the cabin so if there is water getting into any part of the boot or cabin, you will get moisture everywhere.
