Hi,

After having the windscreen replaced the scuttle/cowling at the bottom doesn't fit correctly. The car is going in for a leak test as water seems to be coming in and collecting in the passenger foot well, not much, but it's there. I suspect the rivet ahs been broken that the cowling screws into. I've seen this mentioned on MK2 cars, but not on a MK1 like mine. Windscreen company has said it's not for them to replace, but will test for leaks and I need to push the cowling with the insurance company.

Is there a safe product/recommended way for me to stick this down to the windscreen?

Thanks,

More likely that your hood drain tubes and/or sill drains are blocked.

AFAIK, the Mk1 scuttle is secured with screws, no?

Did the installer take the scuttle off? I ask because it's possible that the scuttle was pulled back to dive the screen in behind it; might also explain the water in the cabin.

It is secured with screws. I've read about these breaking, on the MK3 I think?

I've taken it back to the windscreen company and they've agreed to remove and refit. I suggested these rivets/screws on the scuttling and he didn't seem to agree with me. I've attached a photograph with the glovebox removed. It's also been suggested that it's coming in from the passenger window seal (as this area is a little bit damp), but might have been because it was under the car cover so I've put the windows right up and cover back room to see what happens. I don't see how that would lead to water in the glovebox. They've also advised if it is the grommets/screws this isn't down to them.

These scuttle panels often curl up at the edges - both my mk1s showed signs of it, even though all the fixings and brackets were fine. I even bought a 2nd hand one to replace mine only to find it did the same thing. On the positive side, I'm fairly sure that they aren't a key part of sealing the windscreen anyway - I drove around for a couple of weeks a few years back with mine completely removed because I was waiting for a couple of new parts to be delivered that I needed the scuttle off to fit. Only point of leakage with it totally missing was the ventilation fan air intake (which I just taped a plastic bag over for the few weeks). So my guess is the scuttle itself isn't the source of the leak. I'd take it off and see what it looks like underneath and see if there's obvious damage that might be providing water access to the cabin.

Good luck!
