Test drove the MK4...

...on the weekend. 2 litre Sports Nav.

What a car. I test drove a GT86 a few weeks ago and I can't fathom why anyone would go for that after driving the MX5.

I 'm now on the lookout for a second hand one... may wait a few months for the 65 plate ones to hit <16k and then make the purchase!

I can now understand why it has such a fan base.

I own a Mk3.5 2L Sport Tech, we drove the Mk4 courtesy of the MX5 OC open day at Mazda HQ.
Liked bits of it but the small boot was the deal breaker.

Must admit I didn't check the boot. Was too busy driving it.

I agree. Absolutely loved the one I borrowed for a day from Lodge Garage, Aylesbury. Would definitely consider buying one.

In terms of size it isn't bad although we (the wife!) struggles when we're away for anything longer than a weekend. However the opening is quite a bit smaller than the Mk3
With the Mk3 we can just get two airline carry ons in there with a small space for a few other bits.

Just a shame the lease options are such poor value for money currently. Vertu Lease Cars seems to have the best deals at the moment, but even then, 2 years at 1/3rd of the value of the car - can't justify it!

I sat in one the other day before I bought a 3.5 - didn't notice the boot was smaller but the interior was definitely smaller too I could fit in properly (6ft2). As you say the Mk3 is usable - enough for a couple of bags. Oh well, looks like a deal-breaker then unless you want an Elise-sized/weight car.

Two words: soft bags. I would rather buy new bags than have to compromise on the car.

I took my mk4 for a 14 day tour last year and we had room to spare.

FWIW I can easily fit 2 standard "airline cabin bags" in the ND with space on the sides for various bits like bottles of wine, walking boots, jackets etc.

The boot is quite deep so they just stack on top of each other without drama. It also fits a full weeks' shopping (for 2) with no issues
