re cambelt change

Hi all just wanted to know how much roughly a cambelt change would be. I recently bought a mx5 and it does'nt seem to have had one done , it has done 82,000 and should i get a service done at the same time or that first? I ve just had a oil &filter done today but would like it all done. A garage said they would do service &cambelt for £250 so what doyou think? thanks mandy.

I think the interval is 54,000 or somewhere close to that. The Mk1 and Mk2 engines are non-interference so a breakage would be a pain rather than a disaster. I had mine done (on its own, no service) for £100 so including a service that sounds pretty fair.

He currently has my car in for a service and cambelt (and a couple of other bits and bobs) - same as you I bought the car at 83k miles and there is no record of a change so thought it best to get it done asap.

Mark is a nice guy and really knows his way around these cars. Reasonable charges as well.

According to his website, cambelt and full service: £150 + VAT. Cambelt on it's own is £90+ VAT

Only had my 5 for three weeks and got a quote for service and cam belt. The service was £183 and the cam belt £174. Mine sounds expensive to what you have been quoted. I had better get more quotes.

Hi just had mine done today the service and cambelt was £156.40 so yes you had better shop around little gem! And he he fitted front grill and refitted the trim on back for £15 so i think that was not bad, as he has had MX5s so he knows all about them, thank god! just need the sills done next he said £50 so iam happy with that. thanks Mandy

Who did you use firstimer? I am not far from you and will probably need a good mechanic soon!

Hi i found him because i went the the car shop in eastbourne to get my wipers fitted for free he is very good, and he happend to be in there so Colin recomended him he a mobile mechanic so he will come out to you! I already had the oil and filter done but he is very good the whole bill for the cambelt and the rest of service plus fitted grill and refitted back trim was £143.40 let me know if you want his number, his names Nick. It's not a big job on a MX5, so I would think c. £150 sounds fair.

might be an idea to change water pump while its all stripped down even if its not leaking.did my cambelt myself and 3 months later water pump goes .you have to remove cambelt etc to get to the water pump so had to do it all again .got nearly as quick at it now as a garage though .

It's certainly recommended to do the waterpump at the same time for exactly the reason you mentioned...
