14 degree BTDC on a Mk1 1.8?

Does this make a difference on a 1.8? I know it is supposed to make a difference on a 1.6

Yes. More midrange torque & throttle response. Some say that it looses a bit at the top end but I never noticed anything. I think the improvement is less than on a 1.6 but as it's free it's still well worth it.
