Im pretty sure i saw this asked before, but i cant find it. My 89 Mx5 seems to suffer from
a hude amount of condensation, causing mould on the seats and steering wheel and a small shower
effect from the roof. Its been sat in the garage all winter, but Id like to clear it up before it ventures back on the roads.

there must be some drain tubes/channels somewhere that are blocked?? any pointers please chaps confused

Probably the drain holes behind the seats.

You'll need a wire coat hanger to poke down the drain holes which are located behind the seat belt turret. Pull back the carpet slightly and you'll be able to see the hole.

If they are blocked it's likely that the parcel shelf carpet is soaked. I removed mine and it took about a week to try when over the radiator.

Do you have condensation in the boot and a wet boot carpet?

It could be the drain holes behind the rear seat or it could be one of the following:

  • Seal on the rear light
  • Leak where the ariel joins the body
  • Seal on the hard top clip
All are easily sorted with a little bit of sealant.

Also when you take the carpet off the parcel shelf get someone to spray a hose over the roof to ensure that the rain rail hasn't split. (You shouldn't get any water coming into the car).

My guess what would be the two drain holes behind the seat though.

To get rid of the mould, dry the car out, then spray an all purpose cleaner (tesco's do a cheap one) diluted around 10:1 with hot water then rub off.

Just to let you know that when the seal went on the bracket for the hard top it took a while to track down...

at one point I had nearly 2cm of water in the well of the boot! And that was just from an overnight storm.

At least once a month I use a coat hanger to ensure that the drain holes are clear.

Cheers for the tips guys

Autoglym interior cleaner is good for cleaning off mould.
Using household cleaners is a no no for cars as the materials used are treated in a different way to house furniture, cheap cleaners may contain lots of harmful things like salt and ammonia.

When I had my mark 1 MX-5 I found the best thing for cleaning mould off the inside of the hood was.............neat vodka!! just dab some onto a cloth and wipe it in, it cleared all the mould and seemed to stop it coming back. Just leave the windows down so you dont smell like a brewery driving along smile
