I've had my 1999 Camaro Z28 with AF for a few years now. Last year they tried it on with the renewal quote and after a bit of ringing round, I rang them back with my lower quotes and they matched the 2nd lowest. When I asked why they didn't just offer me their best rate to start with (silly question I know but I was interested to hear what they'd say), I got some gobbledygook response which didn't explain any such thing - but I left it as the price I ended up with was ok.

This year, the renewal was 10 quid more than last (£260). I put my details into Quotezone online, just on spec, and one of the replies I got was from Adrian Flux, offering me £175!! So I rang them (bearing in mind the renewal line is a premium rate number but the "new business" line is an 0800 one. Standard practice perhaps but taking the mickey I think). They looked into the "new business" quote they gave me and gave me some nonsense about the engine size being noted as "1800cc, not the actual 5660cc". Quotezone has no field on its data for engine size...I checked. I then told them I'd heard car insurance has dropped on average by 12% over the last year. "Yes we hear that a lot from our customers but that's just an overall figure and every customer is different...". Yes, I said - and as I've never once made a claim from you and my details are unchanged, apart from the car depreciating a tad since last year, so I would have expected a better quote.

Silence.

I asked if they could give me a better renewal quote or should I schlep around the web. No they couldn't "but if you want to come back to us with your best quotes we do guarantee to match like for like...blah blah".

I went to Aviva, just out of interest as my home insurance is with them. They came back with £189 (including 15% existing customer discount)! Am I ringing Adrian Flux back? No. Their respect for their customers is zero and I don't think they give two hoots about keeping business, frankly.

Still, I bet their "new business" quote next year will be competitive...

I don't think this is just a problem with AF, I have found over the years that most if not all ins co's do this, an example, a few years ago my renewal for my bike insurance was £249, it had been around £110 for the previous couple of years, I rang around & got it down to £90, called back the original insurers who then offered to match it. I have to admit I may have been a little bit abusive & told them to shove it as I don't do business with thieves or con-men which ever category they chose to put themselves in. JMO

Never bother with flux they are always too high, some times double the rate of others. I understand each insurer is different but the reason for asking double is a bit mind boggling to me.

Bizarrely I got ANOTHER renewal quote from them today - dated the day before my phone call. For the same price as last year. One wonders if the left hand knows what the right hand is doing. Never had 2 independent renewals quotes from the same company before...

Remember they are a broker.

I can't remmeber if it was AF, but I queried this with one company. I was told it was from the insurance companies direct, quoting a better price for new business.

I have no idea if this is true or I was just being fobbed off.

I recently got my IROC-Z back on the road and the insurance through Adrian Flux came in at over £700. This was a bit of a shock as it had never been over £350 in the past. This is a car that I've owned for many many years and always insured through them.

Perhaps I should hunt around.
