They never fitted the T5 to anything above 190hp because it wouldn't take it. I know they use them in Cossies and TVRs so not really sure what the issue is.

The issue is probably the torque rather than the BHP.

Just about sitting on the left in a wide car.

I have a Mercury Grand Marquis which is huge. I flew up to the Highlands of Scotland to buy it and even after 700 miles of narrow windy yet fast A roads and Motorways back to London, I thought I had a hang of it until I got to the congested residential streets of South West London. Then I thought that I'd made a mistake and more so when I started using it to commute across London for work.

Within a couple of weeks it was all second nature and just like driving my e36 which I have owned for 16 years.

I like the look in people's eyes as I barrel towards them between the parked cars in a 2 meter wide by nearly 5.5 meter long car biggrin

BTW my e36 now feels like a little Go-Kart biggrin

I remember reading about you driving about London in the Marquis!

In retrospect I think it just felt a bit alien the first time and given another chance I'd have adapted to it. Really wish I'd taken the chance to buy it when I had it - I think the low fuel prices mean everyone's holding on to their V8s and I've not had a similar chance since...

Might be considered a bit pricey - depends if that mileage is miles or km (many were Jap imports)
It is manual, it has leather but it is a convertible and very monotone....

Haha! I've actually been to look at that car! It is a nice car, in good condition and sounds lovely but relatively quiet through its stainless exhaust. I didn't test drive as I didn't want to waste the salesman's time (I'm far too considerate, I should have taken it out...) but it wasn't for me. It felt a bit... middle aged. My GF and I sat in there and looked about and agreed it didn't feel as special or exotic as the Camaro. That said, I drive past a Cobra SN95 each morning - that looks a lot more purposeful...!

He's had that convertible on his books since at least June, if I get desperate I might still give him a call and ask how far he'll budge on the price, but I'd be looking for at least another £1500 off before I was properly interested.

Ah - do we have a camaro convert? Are you 3 or 4 gen thinking now?
Personally (and I admit I'm fair odd), I still get a buzz out of driving my 4th gen. There is a mild sense of occasion to any drive in it.

I've always considered the Camaro a better car than the Mustang. When I changed my (lowered and Bilstein sprung)4th gen Z28 for an S197 Mustang, I had tpo modify the Mustang as I would not have been able to live with it, stock. Better looks and interior though but GM had nothing, at the time, so it was an obvious choice.

I'm talking 3rd gen, but I've not had a chance to look at or sit in a 4th gen - again, no manuals come up, although there was a firebird that came up at the end of last year. I didn't bid, but it went for a price that made me think I should have...

The SN95 was just a bit too close to being a V8 mondeo... although it looked better and more muscular in the flesh than I was expecting.

The Camaro definitely felt like more of an event - especially the view out across that wide, flat bonnet.

Actually, does anyone have any advice on an RS vs. an IROC?

I'm not bothered by the power deficit, but would the lack of LSD (on the stock model), and the lower ratio steering box make it much less satisfying to drive? As far as I know, these things can be switched between cars relatively easily, but I'd be interested in experiences and opinions!

In my experience, the RS felt like driving a saloon car whereas the Z28/IROC did not. Not sure what the main differences were, any more but the RS seemed to sit higher or maybe it was just the seats.
That said, the later injected RS put out 190hp which is better than earlier carburetted Z28s and certainly one year of IROC only had 190.

Hmmm, thanks for the input!

I think the V8 RS only ever came with the 170bhp TBi engine... however I've also found people say that an open filter and an exhaust will boost this number quite easily. If you believe forums anyway!

I guess I'll just have to drive it and see if it pushes my buttons.

I think you're right on the 170 but my 1987 carbed Z28 only made 170 from the LG4 and wouldn't go faster than a 16.2 on the quarter. My 1998 Z28 ran 13.8 at 105 so the difference was night and day and why I still love 4th gens.

One thing I would say about Camaros (I had a 4th gen LS1 for 7 years until recently). You mentioned driving down little Kent lanes - Camaros are a bit big and I ended up never taking it to Dorset whenever I went there for that reason - the back roads can be very small. The turning circle is roughly that of an ocean liner too (well, not really of course, but it IS a big turning circle) so whichever one you end up test driving, bear it in mind.

Thanks Flip. Size is a concern, but then again a third gen is about the size of an E60 or F10 5-series, and they seem to get about ok! After walking away from that first IROC I watched vans, coaches, lorries and Discoveries using these narrow roads, and started to feel a bit of a wuss.

I'm hoping to drive another this weekend, so we'll see how it goes...

I hadn't considered turning circle before, so I'll look out for it!

Cheers!
