Apologies if this isn't the right place for this thread, but a friend is looking for an American car to take her daughter and her friend to their prom this Weds eve (6th May). It's in the Dorking Surrey area, and my friend is willing to pay. A Mustang would be first choice (being her daughter's favourite car) but anything American would be appreciated. Please let me know if you can help.
Thanks in advance.

If someone excepts payment for using their car for a prom night they won't be covered by their insurance. In reality, to stay on the correct side of the law, they would need to do it for free. Now, this may not matter as the chance of getting stopped is relatively low but in the event of an accident there will be no insurance to pick up the bill.

I always wondered about this if a similar request came up when I had a US car.

Surely a gift would be above board. A week's worth of food shopping, a case of wine or some beer tokens.

OP I would have loved to have done it but I have just sold my Yank Tank and now waiting for a Mustang due at the end of the year.

Nope. Weddings and funerals are okay.

Anything else and it needs to be licenced, which isn't going to happen. Doesn't matter what you accept as payment.

That's interesting. Surely you need hire and reward insurance for Weddings and Funerals.

I should have kept that Mercury.

You'll need the insurance but not not a licence. I used to do the odd prom as a freebie and some of the parents used to donate to charity of their own accord.

And that is why they changed the rules on coaches.

You used to be able to drive a coach on a car licence and certain churches etc. would own a coach and take PH bookings without payment but you then had to donate to the church fund.

Regarding Private hire vehicles the only vehicles that are exempt from being licenced are wedding and funeral cars however they will need to be insured. Then some of those vehicles get used for so called executive jobs flouting the laws.

The system was a joke as American limos were operating for 20 years without licenses and carrying out PH work. Only took the authorities 20 years to realise.
