Hi hand book says use 5w 20 for the MDS system, ours had timing chain recall and dealer told us they put in 10 w 40, but now they are saying for an oil change they recommend 0w 40 so confused, want to go with what hand book says but any one know different

Many thanks

Jules,

I have the official Factory Service Manual (Chrysler Tech Authority) for 2009 Challengers which states :

SAE VISCOSITY

Vehicles with 5.7L engines equipped with Multiple Displacement System (MDS) must use SAE 5W-20 oil. Failure to do so may result in improper operation of the Multiple Displacement System (MDS). Refer to Multi Displacement System under Starting and Operating for details. Refer to the engine oil filler cap for the recommened engine oil viscosity for each vehicle. An SAE viscosity grade is used to specify the viscosity of engine oil. Use only engine oils with multiple viscosities such as 5W-20 or 5W-30. These are specified with a dual SAE viscosity grade which indicates the cold-to-hot temperature viscosity range.

Engine Oil (5.7L Engines) MOPAR® API Certified SAE 5W-20 engine oil, meeting the requirements of Chrysler Material Standard MS-6395. 6.6 Liters

I'd be asking the dealer to show me the tech bulletin which switched the grade. Fiat Chrysler seem not to be importing MOPAR lubricants into Europe any longer and dealers switch oil grades when they have no Petronas / Selenia direct equivalent.

I always supply my own lubricants to the exact OEM spec. for servicing.

hi just a thought my 2008 srt8 6.1 uses 0w 40 [says on cap] after having valve spring issues i went on lots of forums as i thought it was timing chain related which mentioned the fact that they replaced 5.7 chain & tensioner with stronger 6.1 set up .Don't know if this helps but CHALLENGERTALK seems to be the place to ask questions .i replaced all my valve springs with exhaust springs a bit of a job but so lucky that inlet spring had the cage fitted otherwise it would have been into piston & i think the term they use is grenade the motor

You can get 5w20 in a million different flavours from Opie Oils.

They are a PH sponsor.
