I've been offered a low mileage, late, high spec (Orvis) 4.0 Cherokee.

It has one problem - it just won't start. It turns over fine and sparks and bursts into life for a moment before dying.

We've ascertained that the immobiliser kills it and we think it's an ECU issue.

Does anybody have any ideas or knowledge of likely difficulty/expense sorting this out? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it.

This problem started a few years ago and the car has been kept on the seller's drive since then. It spent a couple of months at Drayton Chrysler in Wolverhampton and they came back with some extraordinary fee for a replacement ECU which wasn't worth it.

Probably the alarm. The stupid cheap things Chrysler fitted to UK imports fill with water and then do this. I removed mine. Or it could be a broken wire in a door not telling the immobiliser it's unlocked. Lots of info on the jeep forums.

I know that that was a common problem on TJ Wranglers (I'm not sure about YJ, but I know they had plenty of issues due to import stuff.

I wasn't aware it was too bad on the XJ? I will talk to the guy and ask what he knows about that.
