Cheers Gavin,
What you've suggested echoes my own thoughts. An f150 or similar
Sized rival just doesn't have the towing or load capacity I'm after.
I've seen a lot of trucks with big tyres and huge lift kits romping around
San diego. Not what I'm into and will steer well clear of them.
Just out of curiousity what year was hour friends truck? Should help
Me home in on a realistic price & expectation scenario.

I've now driven a couple of trucks and I'm mightly impressed with GMC, Ford and Dodge. The '09 F250 6.4L Lariat is a luxury car on the inside with acres of leg room and whole herds of leather covering everything.
It was $53,000 though. I just spoke to Encinitas Ford and the manager offered me a 2008 fully loaded Lariat 4x4 with long bed, crew cab etc. for $41,000 inclusive of sales tax and reg. fees.
Drove a GMC Silverado HD 2500, 6.6l Duramax diesel with Extended cab (not quite a proper crew cab) and lots of toys. $34,000 with the 5 year warranties etc. from a dealer in Georgia that was a lot of truck for not a lot of money. Only thing putting me off is the lack of a proper crew cab, my truck is going to be a multi use vehicle and will be transporting wife and future children for the next 5-7 years. Otherwise that GMC was a great buy.
Was also offered a 2005 F250 Lariat with 60k miles for $26k which I thought was a little steep and the dealer was firm on the price.
I just have to try the Dodge and start making some hard choices...
