Which cars/pick-ups/trucks/whatever came with the 7.3 V8 oil burner lump as standard?
It had one huge turbo, right?

i think the V8 Duramax can be stroked out to about that size! that had one large turbo mounted in the middle of the banks (right next to the intake mansifolds).

The 7.3 diesel was the Ford Powerstroke.
You can find it in the F250/350 truck range from 1993 to 2003.

Thanks guys.
I have bought a 7.3 Ford V8 turbo diesel motor, unseen admittedly, for precious little money.
My idea is a winter project, using a 1993 Range Rover, which i was given last year. (MOT failure, blown-up 3.9 engine).
I kinda like the idea of a 500+ bhp Rangey which looks essentially standard.
I have seen several 700 and even 800 bhp custom pick-up Fords Stateside, incredible output for a derv. So 500 should be available for sensible money.

Sounds like a fun project!

How much more does it weigh though? - It's a good job that Rangies aren't intended to handle...

It is amazing how much power you can get from these Deisel engines. I have seen the durmax turning out LOADS of power (probalby 4 figures) but its the torque that really gets you! your 500bhp might net 1000++lbsft of torque! smile

I've just bought an F350 with this motor in, and it's unbelievable. Not that powerful as standard, but I've got hold of an Edge Evolution Programmer from US, which adds another 100 bhp & 200 ft/lbs. And all for £300! As standard, it drags 3 1/2 tonnes around at anything up to 95mph, and still gives 15 mpg.

Motor was originally an International, and some parts are interchangeable. Some good websites around....

Could also be an earlier 7.3 IDI with a Turbo conversion, rare but possible.
We have the 7.3 N/A version in the motorhome

It's a later engine, from a 1999 pick-up, apparently.

A custom truck i saw and went in, over in Santa Barbara last year, had 800 bhp and 1,200 lbs-ft. The truck was stripped out and had few pleasantaries so the weight was decent at 2900 kgs.
Still heavy, but with 800 bhp, it still had the power to weight ratio of a BMW M5 V10!

Wander over to www.dieselpowermag.com and check out the
diesel modding community for ideas and suggestions. There's also
a member on PH (Forget his ph name) that works on Ford diesel trucks day in day out.
Personally I think the 7.3 was a decent engine before the infamous 6.0L
pile of crap came out in 2004. Good luck with the project and let us know what happens.

Thanx. Another engine which seems to be very tuneable is the 6.7 litre straight 6 derv, again, i forget which vehicles came with it as standard.

What gearbox / transfer box combo are you thinking of running?
I'm putting 400-500ft/lb through the LT230 without any problems but my 700R4 auto is the weak link in heavy, high traction, high weight combos - Although I've got a combination of parts inside mine that seems to be working nicely at the moment. The TH400 or 4L80e is better suited if you can mate it to your engine.

Then you need to consider UJ's on the props as you will be outside the envelope on them. You will of course run 4 pin diffs and HD half-shafts as the std ones will bend the pins. so the engine may be cheap, but expect to lay some cash down on beefing everything else up!
