Can anyone suggest a suitable bricks and mortar shop near Bristol/Bath where I can try before I buy? It's all very well looking at online shops, but I need to try them out, as I've previously owned pens which I just can't write with. I'd prefer to buy vintage, but a suitably refined modern would get my money too!
Thanks in advance!
If you can wait until February then there is a fountain pen show in Bristol where there will be lots of dealers selling new and vintage pens. It's a nice atmosphere and you often get the chance to try before you buy. Thanks in advance!
Apart from that there are precious few places in the south west. London is your best bet.

Is Penfriend the best place? As well as Penfriend, where else in London is worth a look?costsmonkey said:

Nobody has mentioned Dupont pens?
I cannot remember which Ballpoint and Fountain pen I have, but they look great (Stainless steel)... will post some pictures when back in London town.
Some great looking pens on this thread lads!

Good thread bump! Just read through the whole thing.
I have a Pelikan M800 that I love to bits. Lovely to write with, fantastically well-built. Looks good. Was a leaving present from some dear friends, which only adds to its specialness (to me, at least). I use it daily.
I admit, I love the fact that it isn't a MB (lawyers are so predictable). I had a MB biro that a cleaner nicked off my desk. Entirely un-missed. A little scratchy in comparison to a decent nib, and the pen was too thin at the tip and top-heavy.

I noticed more and more in the last few years that fountain pens are some what a rarity in meetings now? Electronic records are hard to argue with...
Yup. I take a lot of hand written notes using the surface pro. What I need its a really good quality stylus that works like a pen. The Surface Pro one works like a pen but lacks the tactile pleasure of my Pelikan. Mind you is was only about 1/6th of the costAs promised here's pictures of my new pen.
As mentioned it's something quite different, albeit it just a Cross Roller ball.
It's actually a special limited edition by Cross to support the work of Fonderie 47.
Each pen carries a unique serial number of the AK 47 rifle that was taken out of Commsion and destroyed.
I felt it was a very good cause, and wanted to lend my support. Plus I get a very nice new pen out of it too.
As you can see it comes in a unique presentation box, with certicates and the history of Fonderie 47 organisation.
It also comes with a wooden display stand, which I had hoped might have also been a part of the gun, but I think all AK47 have metal, stocks, at least the ones I have used on ranges in the past were all metal, but still a nice touch with the logo on the stand.
Here's a link to the cross web site.

And a video of the background to the pen and background.

That is pretty cool. I love recycled stuff - I have a Poljot SS-18 watch, made from a recycled ICBM.
Great stuff! I think you'd made from an ICBM is cooler than an old AK 47 though.,Edited by Don1 on Tuesday 18th October 12:33
Of course I fancied the watch that Fonderie 47 Produce too, but could not quite run to $195,000,

That is rather nice. Hmm..
It is a very nice thing indeed. It's great too look at, and even nicer to hold too!
Seems perfectly weighted, and very well balanced in the hand too, seems to make my handwriting better too, which can only be a good thing.
Plus there's something more, I can't quite put my finger on it but it feels very special, magical almost.
I wonder if there is something in the old adage that machines can acquire a soul?
The more I think about it, the more I wonder who used it, and how many people it shot, killed or mamed when it was an AK 47!
It certainly makes you think.
So my recent Cross limited edition pen has set me on a downward spiral of associated purchases.
Discovered this on one of the online shops whilst persuading for cases for my new AK47 Cross Pen.
It arrived yesterday, and it's really a very nice pen indeed.
Another Cross limited edition, this one is made of platinum and is decorated to celebrate the Japanese Sakura blossom.
This is actually a very fine and equiste writing instrument indeed!
