Hello, I have today inherited a pocket watch, from my late grandmother, originally my great grandfathers. Today was the first time i had seen or heard about this watch, And it very nearly ended up in the bin. Anyway, Having tried and failed to find any background on the makers, I thought I would open to the PH detectives, See if anyone is more adept with Google than myself. The only info i can find is a Pdf suggesting that the company filed for bankruptcy in 1869... not sure if they continued trading. I cant find any other note of these watches on the net currently, for sale or just general info. Front facing pic below, Anyone need any further details from the watch, i have it here to I will look. I'm not sure how to open it. Obviously missing a hand.. http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/850/watchp.jp...Thanks

Also, anyone have any ideas on how to open the back to see the movement(or even if i should, as it probably hasn't been opened for a very long time)?

Don't do that, take it to an independent watchmaker who has the right tools for the job, to make sure you don't damage the case. ideally find someone who knows about restorations, if you say where you live the PH massive may have recommendations. Then they can quote you on a clean & service of the movement and anything else you might want (if parts are available).

I used Michael Kibby up in Boston to repair and service it. Was cheaper than I thought it would be. http://www.fuseeman.com/Yours is key would so opening the back should only require a finger nail, and you won't do any damage to it.
