I am looking to buy a secondhand Rolex which is located some 250 miles away from me in Grays,Essex, and was wondering if anyone knew of a jeweller near there that I could use to authenticate the watch for me.(ie Have a look over it and obtain the serial number),before I travel down to buy?

There's a Goldsmiths in Bluewater and quite possibly one in Lakeside, two nearby shopping centres. No idea if they would be prepared to authenticate a watch though.

The seller took it to Goldsmiths in Lakeside but they would not do it.

If the seller is legit surely he would take the watch back and refund you if you could prove it wasn't genuine?

To be honest, and having bought and sold many watches over the years,I dont want to get into a situation where I have handed over my money without being 100% sure the watch is legit.

There's a lost and stolen line for Rolex watches, not sure if it's available to the public but if the seller has all the serial numbers this could be a good place to start? Goldsmiths have the number and so do mappin and Webb so you could try these?

The Rolex lost and stolen line was closed to the public some time ago which was a grave error in my opinion.

I have been informed by the seller that this watch has no papers or receipts and has had its serial number removed/plated over so Im going to be giving this one a wide berth.

My Submariner had had the same, but that was genuine.
No idea why it had been done, but both the model reference and the serial number (bar the first 3 digits, so it could be dated) had been dremeled off.

Good idea on walking though OP, too much of a risk.

Usually to protect the AD who sold it into the grey market cheaply, or who sold discounted to a broker.

Highly undesirable though, and less common now I believe.

Would Rolex snaffle such a watch should it ever be sent to them? Fair enough if there are some genuine watches out there like that but I can't see Rolex being too happy about it.

Why did Rolex get rid of their lost and stolen register?

No, you own what you own and stories about Rolex 'keeping' other peoples property, whether genuine or not, are just that - stories.

If the watch was stolen then thats another matter, of course.

Ive always thought that Rolex stopped their provenance service because it was simply easier for them.

The register is still there, but what has been lost is the ability for a member of the public to ring up and check a serial number of a watch. You can add a stolen watch by writing in to them.

Ok. So I can't ring them up and add one I've bought?

I hadn't thought of that, interesting that dealers would have gone to those lengths to cover their tracks.
